Question about the dive

When you are fielding a grounder and it is far to the left or right, when do you decide to dive or not- because some are a bit too close, but then you can't actually reach them. Some seem too far away but you catch up to them. What makes you decide to dive for the ball? I do it alot, but sometimes I feel like maybe I shoudln't or be doing it more. Thanks.

Its pretty much natural instinct for me to dive or not. When I dive, I rarley actuly think about it when I'm going for the ball.
