During one of the weekly calls from a coach my son was asked "what percentage scholarship he expected to receive." He confessed that this caught him off guard and had to think about his response. Too little and he was leaving money on the table, to much and they might loose interest. He responded with 50%. This was from an out of state school that has consistently called each week during the summer. We were scheduled to make an official visit in a couple of weeks. Is there a better way to respond?

In one of the may posts -- we copied another parent’s suggestion of keeping a log book of all the conversations with each school. This helps us as parents to be kept in the loop and to offer suggestions for our son and to know where we are in the process with each school. Wonderful tool! You can tell at a glance when the last conversation was and what about. Also over time you can see patterns with frequency and tone.

We know that there are 5 schools that are discussing visits to their campuses either official or unofficial. So I am sure we will be asked the question again.

I agree with TRhit, the best response to the "What % do you expect" question, IMO, is to answer with your own question of "What percentage will you be offering coach?". Smile It's the coaches job to make the offer and bartering for a scholarship is not a standard practice. So having you go first to name a $ figure has more of a downside than not. Cool
I agree with TR, best response to the question is to answer with that question.
Personally, I think coaches asking that question is playing the game with the kids head.
I also get a kick out of when they ask, what will it take for you to come play here. Well ,coach, how about 100% scholarship!

My philosophy, either make an offer or don't say a word. I know if a coach had said that to my son, it would be a turn off for him. I know that is how they do things, I just can't buy into it.

Some are not that savvy, but I think they have a responsibility to let the recruit know what they offer, percentage wise for each position.
It's then up to the player and his family to decide, what would work best for them.
