Based on last years games, what question (and rule book or case book answer)would you like to see on a FED test?
Replies sorted oldest to newest
Not a rule/case but a mechanics one. Anything to do with balls that do not leave the infield, PU stays home. Had several partners want to cover third. I would always tell them I would rather have their help with a pulled foot or swipe tag.
I'd say questions on things that are harder to fix afterwards if you mess up like delayed dead ball scenarios.
Anything that starts "Now that we have adopted NCAA rules..."
Something easy to read, where there's only one logical answer and doesn't elicit hour long conversations about the "hidden meaning" behind the question...
Avoid fictional scenarios where the answer ends up being buried in some obscure reference based on a single word (shall, must, may) in the question or a play that's happened maybe twice in history... Has anyone ever seen a batted ball hit sharply into the ground and rebound high into the air coming down inside the base umpire's shirt? (that was a question last year)... Sure that one was easy to answer, but if that ball lands inside your shirt something is not quite right.
In the end, it's supposed to be a rules test, not a test of the English language or one's ability to visualize poorly described plays and make a ruling (all, err, most, err, many of those balk questions in the last couple years).
Thanks guys!!!
I think good questions to cover would be interference calls, For example, interfernce at second base on a double play situation, and interference at home by the batter; who is out and where do the runners go. Also, time of the pitch vs. time of the throw placement of runners after a ball goes out of play are always good questions,
I would like to see NON-Trick Questions on the High School Test.
It seems like all these test writers want to do is trick people.
So they are probably coaches, because coaches LOVE to trick people.
Fully explain the situation and then ask the question based on the FULLY described situation.
EG: Runner on 2nd, two outs. The batter hits a high fly to right field. The RF catches the ball. As he is running into the 3b Dugout, both the 3b Coach AND the Field Umpire notice that he is wearing a 1B Mitt. The Coach says to the ump, "That's an illegal glove, it's a 1b Mitt. The FU agrees with the coach it IS a 1b Mitt.
So what is your call?
A) Do Nothing.
B) Call Time, and award all baserunners 3 bases.
C) Call Time and award all baserunners 2 bases.
D) Call Time and award all baserunners 1 base.
E) Call Time and award all baserunners what in your judgement they would have gotten.
Those are questions that we'd like to see.

I'd like to see what people think the answer is to this one.
There is no distinction between a glove or a mitt, provided that they meet the maximum specifications, therefor the catch is legal. As the umpire there is nothing to call, Answer A. PS - this question is the same as posed in last seasons NFHS Case Book (rule 1.3.6 situation C - Page 10)
yeah, thanks, I know the answer... you missed the point.
None trick questions.
Fully developed and thorough scenarios.
No trickeration.
I deal with enough coaches trying to play trickeration games.

I did not miss the point. It was a side comment.

Thanks guys !!! I am putting together a set of questions for my Cadets and members who do not pass the State Test.
