Question for JUCO-Knowledgeable California People

Have finally convinced rising senior son that the JUCO route is definitely worth looking into. The list is long.

I was wondering if any of you might recommend a few good programs where they do a good job of developing players who may be off-the-radar but have solid innate skills and size? I know some of the Cali JUCOs are loaded with DI and draftable material, and that is not my son, not at this time.
Therefore, looking for one of the 'other' programs that competes with kids who are diamonds-in-the-rough.

Also, do any of these schools have on-campus housing options? I know most do not.

Any help/suggestions appreciated. We'll be in the state (pretty much the entire length of it) in mid-August and would like to visit some schools, have son meet some coaches. Can a kid throw a pen for a JUCO coach in California, or is it forbidden?

Start here. Look over this and you can get in contact with coaches at the programs that seem of interest to you.

I know Cuesta has an on campus arrangement with Cal Poly the others I am not sure. Cuesta is a heavyweight in their league and in your sons case they might redshirt him. A teammate of my son's goes there and was redshirted last year and he lived in a dorm. He will start at third this year.

I am sure CADad can get you in touch with the SB coach and I can get you in contact with the Ventura coach.

Here is a good source to check out: California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA). Lots of information here. It will provide the colleges that made it to this year's CCCAA state championships. Archive links will give previous year teams. If you click on the "schedule" link, the drop-down selection will give you a list of the 85 junior colleges that participate in the CCCAA. They make up 6 leagues in the north and 6 in the south. The "standings" link will give you an idea of each school's ranking. Lots to choose from. Good luck this summer! Smile
