question on foul tip? | High School Baseball Web

In a Wisconsin D1 regional game, bases are loaded and batter attempts a suicide squeeze, batter foul tips the ball into the catcher's glove, and then the catcher proceeds to run down the runner from third, ump calls foul ball and runner is not out? was this the right call?

Bad call....
A FOUL TIP is a batted ball that goes sharp and direct from the bat to the catcher's hands and is legally caught. It is not a foul tip unless caught and any foul tip that is caught is a strike, and the ball is in play.

Fungo - I always respect your opinion but when I read the question I thought it went like this.

1. Player bunts - foul tip - less then two stikes (assumes he wouldn't have been bunting with two stikes.

2. Catcher catches foul tip - ball is called foul by ump.

If I understand it correctly the ump would call a foul/stike and the runner is returned to third.

To take it another direction (less then two strikes - batter takes regular swing - foul tip caught by catcher - runner on first casually makes his way back to first - catcher throws to first and gets the runner prior to returning to bag - out/safe?

If a player can steal on a foul tip (from baseball official rules)

then I would assume the runner could be tagged out if he attempted to steal?? Umps and experts weigh in please.
