R2. On a passed ball R2 attempts to go to third. On an awesome recovery, throw and tag R2 is tagged out at 3rd.

The 3rd base coach is hollering that his runner was obstructed by the SS. He actually begins yelling obstruction well before the tag.

You did not/could not see the obstruction as you are in the C position so the alleged obstruction is behind you and on the passed ball you keep your eye on the ball and let the ball take you to the play.

The HC in the third base box comes out to talk. He explains to you that the SS ran in from his position and intentionally bumped into his runner.

You let him know that you did not see the contact as you were watching the ball and could not rule on something you did not see.

He asks you to check with your partner. Your partner didn't see anything as he was also watching the ball.

Is there anything you can do to be able to see the possible obstruction mechanically or is this another shortcoming of the 2 man system

You are correct, as the BU you probably will either miss it or not see enough to be sure. While you want to know where the ball is, you are still responsible for the baserunners. Your PU may get a look as he opens up but if he doesn't then the SS just gets away with one. It's what we call a $70.00 mistake. $70.00 for a third umpire may get you that call.
Sometimes this can be seen and called, and sometimes it can't.

When the ball gets by the catcher the BU should keep his chest to ball and head on a swivel, or as they say, watch the ball, glance at the runner. The more experience a BU has, the more often he will catch F6 cheating.

While it is one of the compromises of the two man system, that shouldn't be an excuse to not try to catch it.
