Wasn't sure if I should post this here or in the recruiting forum, but since I was just looking for general comments I'll post it here.

Son is a junior in high school and this year will be his second year on varsity. He has been recieveing questionnaires from different levels of colleges for about a year now. About a week ago he recieved a letter from Virginia Tech that when opened was just one piece of paper that had a picture of a bird and said what is a Hokie? Then a paragraph explaining what a Hokie is. Then a few days later he recieved another letter again from Virginia Tech and again it was one piece of paper. This time it just had a picture with 1872 written in it. Then it went on to give it's student to teacher ratio and a little info about the college.
Then yesterday he recieved a packet with a questionnaire in it and also about forty pages of info about the school, coaches and baseball team. What seemed strange was that every questionnaire my son has recieved always had a cover page that was a little more formal. We've never contacted this school or asked for their info and since there was no baseball camp info we didn't think it was a mass mailing list(not to mention their cost to mail all the info). The letters before the packet just seemed a little srange to us,any comments?

My son is at the same stage of the process, and we've seen similar stuff from some of the colleges.

One college is sending out, one at a time, "15 reasons to attend _______." I think he has received seven of them so far.

I look at it as a direct mail marketing strategy which they obviously use for their list of prospects.
If your son is interested in attending VT and perhaps playing for them,...fill out the questionnaire.
( Afterthought Edit to my post: TR is right,....interested or not, I should have recomended that you fill out the questionnaire and send it back. Brain-burp on my part. )

Different schools have different promotional strategies. ( & some have a bigger budget than others Wink )

It got your attention, didn't it? Theirs stood out compared to the others?
Mission accomplished! Smart PR Team!

"The origin of the word Hokie has nothing to do with a turkey.IT was coined by O.M. Stull(class of 1896) who used it in a spirit yell he wrote for a competition in 1896. Stull later said that he made up the word as a attention grabber. Soon thereafter the Hokie became the mascot of Virinia Tech. Burnt orange and Chicago maroon were selected as the colors of the school on October 26, 1896 and have remained that way ever since."

This is what the letter read.
