2013 son recieved his first email today from a mid major D1 school's pitching coach/recruiting coordinator wanting him to complete their on line questionnaire. I was under the impression that colleges couldn't make any contact (calls, emails, letters, etc...) with kids until September of their junior year of high school. Can someone please clarify this for me?

Hi there John J:

I've had a few send us emails citing camps and the fact they cant communicate with us due to NCAA rules but, they can ask us to fill out a questionaire.

In a way much of this was precipitated by our sending an invite from the recruiting website (we initiated dialogue).

I interpret "I can't call you because..." as "Please call me..." (which we're allowed to do).

This question has been asked and answered a lot on this site, so I figured I could do a quick search and could find it, but I couldn't.

There are a lot of details, but the bottom line is this:
Coaches can send a questionnaire or camp invite at pretty much any time. 2B started getting questionnaires between his freshman and sophomore year. Ours were not a result of any emails that were sent out - they came after his first summer doing the 16U tour - East Cobb, USA Baseball, etc. (he was 14)

Usually there was a cover letter saying they couldn't "recruit" him at that time due to NCAA rules, so please fill out the questionnaire for their files. They may have referred to him as a "potential recruit" or something like that.

Then on September 1 of the junior year, a player can receive direct email from the coach that is much more specific about their interest. On July 1 between the junior and senior year is when the coach can phone a player directly.

Players can call coaches at any time.

To find out the baseball-specific recruiting calendar, just do a search on "recruiting calendar" and there is tons of information here.

2Bmom- When you say direct mail on this "majic" September 1st date does that include scholarship offers and details about financial aid? I'm with Mizzooubaseball and didn't see anything on that link with regards to baseball.
We interpreted the chart to mean baseball couldn’t “recruit” until after 09/01 of Jr year. But not being an expert, we may be wrong.
For us the “flood gates” opened after 09/01 of Jr year and we starting getting letters encouraging us to call (when the letter says “keep calling until I answer”, it’s a pretty clear message).
He is a Jr this year so we are in the midst of all this now.

I agree with vhs. I think that's probably rare. At least it didn't happen for my son or any of his teammates. The blue chip type players who are going to get offers that early have probably already started a conversation on those topics through a 3rd party like a travel coach. For example, the college coach calls the travel coach and tells him to tell the player to give him a call at a specified time.

The Sept 1 letters 2B got said something like "we saw you at x tournament and liked the way you approach the game. We'd like for you to consider our university as a top choice, blah blah. They might ask for a spring/summer schedule, updated transcript, stuff like that, and a dialog might begin.
