1) Are there such things as invited walk-ons for Ivy League and D3 baseball?

2) Is there any admissions advantage at top academic schools for being an invited walk-on (if it does exist that is)?

3) Regardless of the school, can invited walk-ons ever commit to a school or are they only "committed" when they apply to and are accepted by a school (basically like normal applicants)?

My son was recruited primarily by D3's, and Patriot League teams. Like, Ivies, there is no athletic $ available. Terminology is a little different with D3's as I had not heard "invited walk-on" used. Coaches told my son he was "recruited" or he could come and try out. Most told us that they were very accurate in their assessments so the chance of making the team without being a "recruit" was slim. I am sure this has to do with the make up of the roster as well as talent level.

Where he was not a "recruit" the coach did not offer any assistance in the area of admission.

If coach is not assisting with application, then I cannot see any reason to "commit" to a school any earlier than when non athletes commit. Where money is involved, a dollar amount is offered in return for a commitment. When there is no money, a promise to work with admissions is offered in return for a commitment. When nothing is being offered by the coach, I do not see an upside to "commit". Some other opportunity may present itself.
