Well, I haven't figured out much yet, but here's some notable alumni from some of the schools:

Michigan - Barry Larkin, Jim Abbott, Steve Ontiveros, Leon Robers, Chris Sabo
Michigan State - Steve Garvey, Ron Perranoski, Robin Roberts,
Seminole State College - Eric Gagne, Shate Halter, Kelly Stinett, Adam LaRoche
Maple Woods Community College - Albert Pujols
Stony Brook - Joe Nathan
Fresno City College - Tom Seaver
Richmond - Sean Casey, Brian Jordan
Miami Dade - Mike Piazza
Yavapai - Curt Schilling

I don't know...none of this seems too connected to me. Any more hints? On the wrong track?

justbaseball,

Nice work! You win the prize... which is nothing! Smile

Yes some of the top baseball colleges were left off the list. I found it amazing that the 18 colleges listed had a former player who made last years MLB All Star teams.

I happened on it because of an ongoing pursuit of studying the draft and how it relates to college vs high school players. I charted last years all star teams for results.

I think it answers some questions some on this board have regarding Top DI vs Smaller Schools. It appears there are several of the top players in the Big Leagues who did not attend Major DI Colleges.

We will be posting the results of the study on our site soon. Here's some early data. Among all those named to the 2004 all star game 20 were signed as free agents (mostly from Latin American countries, but 2 from Japan), 19 were signed out of 4 year colleges, 19 were signed out of USA high schools and the rest signed out of Junior College.
Here's what I could dig up. (Do you need someone to work in your research department? kidding).

Seminole State - Eric Gagne
Stony Brook - Joe Nathan
NE Louisiana - Ben Sheets
Richmond - Sean Casey
Northwestern - Mark Loretta
Michigan State - Mark Mulder
Michigan - Barry Larkin
Florida International - Mike Lowell
Oxnard - Jack Wilson
Canada College - Moises Alou
Sauk Valley CC - Dan Kolb
College of the Sequoias - Johnny Estrada
Fresno City - Ted Lilly
Yavapai - Curt Schilling
Gulf Coast CC - Matt Lawton
Maple Woods CC - Albert Pujols
Miami Dade - Mike Piazza

Some others:
Randy Johnson - USC
Roger Clemens - Texas
Ken Harvey - Nebraska
Jason Giambi - Long Beach State
Jim Thome - Illinois Central
Todd Helton - Tennessee
Danny Graves - Miami
Someone from Rice too...can't remember and too tired to dig further.

Couldn't leave this alone once I saw the question. Don't do that again PG! pull_hair BTW, the article that finally cracked the "code" for me was from the Jonesboro Sun in NE Arkansas of all places? noidea It just came up on a Google search when I typed in some of the names on my first list in sequence. From there I just went down the rosters and looked where the players attended colleges and some of these odd ones popped up and I knew I had it! greenjump

I forgot to list this one originally. Mentioned 18 colleges but only listed 17. Illinois Central was the 18th.

Is anyone else surprised by the list of colleges last year's MLB All Stars were signed out of?

Another interesting fact... 20 All Stars were signed as Free Agents and 8 All Stars were drafted after round 20. 12 All Stars were drafted after round 13.

Guess it just goes to show just how inexact the draft can be. Then again, 23 All Stars were drafted in the first 2 rounds including 15 1st rounders.
