Hey guys,

I want to buy a radar gun for our HS baseball team.
Im not really interested in finding out whether johnny throws it 75 or 77 mph... Im looking to see if Johnny can consistently throw his changeup 8-10 mph slower than his 4 seamer.

First question: Do you agree that a radar gun could be an important teaching tool for young pitchers?

Second question: How much should I expect to pay for a quality gun that will actually work? (A few years back I bought a "cheap" device for under $100 and it was worthless)

Thanks

I have a Bushnell gun and love it for my personal use. But, it does not reliably reach a ball from behind a HS backstop - it's too far. They are roughly 3 mph slower than a JUGS gun ($700), but they are consistent when they pick up a reading. They will only pick up pitches about 50% of the time.

For exit speed, they will usually not pick up a reading on alum or composite bats. They will sometimes pick up wood bats.

If I was getting a gun for a HS team, I would buy a JUGS gun.

Here are the things you should use a radar gun for:
1. Compare pitcher velocities - yours and other teams.
2. Compare change of speeds based on pitch type.
3. Measure and compare ball exit speeds - wood bat, off a tee.
4. Adjust BP speed for particularly fast or slow opposing pitchers. Ex. 45 mph behind 30ft L screen for 90 mph pitcher, or 35 mph for 70 mph pitcher.
