Do you guys use a ratings form to keep track of how players perform during tryouts? If so, what kind of things do you include and what kind of scale?

What other methods do you use if you are a new coach to the team and have 50+ players expected at tryouts and don't know many of them to keep track of them all?

I think a rating form is a good way to make sure you CYA if you cut a kid and the parents want to know why. With shaky administrations out there who don't support coaches it's a good way to show that the entire staff felt such and such kid wasn't good enough. Plus it can help when you have one spot and two kids left.

In your situation with 50 kids coming out I would try to make it resemble a pro tryout as best as you can. Do it over 3 maybe 4 days - first day just cut the ones who are probably not safe being out there. Then each day whittle down as you start seeing who has talent versus a kid who had a good day yesterday. Get some "Hi My Name Is" stickers and put a number on them so you can make it through tryouts. Once you get the team then you can learn names.
We are in the same situation. We put Athletic Tape on their sleeve and give them a number.

Day 1.....Play Catch, Run 60's (Cut those who cut those that will become a safety issue.

Day 2.....Pro Style Work Out (Cut down)

Day 3.....Scrimmage with live pitching

We keep an excel spread sheet that can hold 30 names that have stuff on it that allow us to fill out paperwork. We never even have to worry about a kid's name. Those names are kept on a master list.
