Ratio of Unofficial to Official Visits

Our family is in the very early stages of the recruiting process.
My son is a Sophomore. Started on Varsity as a Freshmen and has been to a couple of PG events already.

He is receiving questionaires and camp brochures from the gamut (DI to DIII).
I have three questions for the "experienced" posters out there:

1) I understand you are allowed 5 official visits. How many unofficial visits did you/your son take? I realize that I may get a huge variety of answers on this, especially based on family budgets, but I wanted to get a "feel" if there is some average/norm for unofficial visits.

2) When did you start taking unofficial visits, sophomore or junior year?

3) For those of you that have taken official visits, how many, if any, unofficial visits did you make to that same school? I am trying to find out if any of your sons were interested in a local school (small travel expense), made an initial unofficial visit, which may have been followed up by an official visit.

When you son plays in an event on a college campus or near to campuses---take the time to take a drive thru the campus--see what it is like-- visit the baseball facility-- do your thing

You can do this at any time you are in the region

Its still pretty early in your "process." Coaches will be very happy to talk to you and answer questions now...but this road has many, many turns left in it. I know kids who thought they were being recruited by a school as sophomores only to learn later that wasn't the case. And any school that may "recruit" your son now or not recruit your son may easily change their minds over the next 2 years. Make sure you take a deep breath and enjoy your son's baseball for now...without too much pressure.

About 4 or 5.

1 or 2 to each...usually by invitation. That is, coaches asked if we could stop by to chat. Was more than happy to do that.

#2 son traveled and played on college campuses throughout US all through HS. He used those for unofficial visits.
#3 though asked, we never took unofficial visits

My son made lots of unofficial visits. Around 15. It never hurts to check out a potential school.

Did them in junior year.

He made 2 official visits.

He didnt make any unoffical visits at schools that he visited officially.
