American/National/16U teams will be up soon!!!
Michael Childress bats from the right side but is a state champion sprinter when not on the baseball field. I believe he played for RBA West American over the summer so that's why I was guessing it was his 3.8 time.

He and Colton Konvicka make a heckuva pair at the top of Benedictine's lineup. Konvicka is also 3.8 and even lower, also from the right-hand side.

I once saw Konvicka go from first to third on a Childress bunt. Childress stole on the next pitch. As you might guess it opened a big inning.

I sometimes think Benedictine could play with 5 infielders and only 2 outfielders.

Speed is very fun to play with!

Im sure some players want there stats to be seen by all and some prob would rather not have people know.

This is true, but 3.8 would automatically create interest in almost every decision maker. Kind of like 100+ mph in a pitcher. I would think the kid who did that could benefit from everyone knowing it.

Byron Buxton (GA) ran a 3.81 to 3.89 right side in Georgia. (depending on which stop watch you went by)

Nationals VP, former Scouting Director for the Braves said it was one of the fastest times he had ever seen from the right side. It was the fastest time I had ever seen from the right side.

3.8 from the right side is an "8" runner. In other words the very best in the Major Leagues. Not sure if anyone in the Big leagues right now can run a legitimate 3.8 from the right side.

Guess I would think that any player that attends any "tryout or showcase" and does something better than anyone else in the nation... wouldn't mind if every decision maker knew about it. Isn't that the idea? On the other hand, if it were a private workout or college workout, I could understand why "they" might want to keep it quiet.
Had always heard that Mantle was the fastest mlb player home to first. Looked at google following your post. According to a sporting news article, mantle was timed at 3.1 from the left side and 3.5 from the right side. Presume both were before his knee and leg injuries robbed him of his speed and were both hand timed!

3.8 makes the list of top ten and is mighty fast.
Many of the fast times we read about are on a bunt.

Without proper technique in timing H-1 the stopwatch can vary a half second from one timer to another. Even experiencede scouts timing the same runner H-1 there can be a 10th or more difference in nthe time they get.

If you wait for contact to start the watch you will get a too fast time. If you anticipate touch at first base you will get too fast of a time. If you do both, you're not even close to the correct time.

It is a well known fact that runners don't reach peak speed in 90 feet. This means that most every runner would run the last 30 (90 feet) of the 60 a lot faster than the first 30 (90 feet). More top end speed and not to mention start at the first 30.

A legitimate 3.1 would have made Mantle by far the fastest human being who ever lived. And in track they don't swing the bat and they start in starting blocks.

There have been a few guys who can run a legitimate 3.7 - 3.8 from the right side on a full swing. Very few! I did get Mike Trout in that range once on a ground ball to the second baseman. I got Buxton at 3.84.

I'm not debating whether the kids mentioned can run those times. Some people can and have run that fast, so maybe they are in that small group. But every scout will question it until he sees it himself. There are world class sprinters that played baseball and couldn't run 3.8 H-1. If any kid runs a 3.8 he would automatically be followed by the scouting community.

The player that ran a 3.81 was on a drag since he was hurt and couldnt swing. We do not have a laser watch so it could be a tenth of a second off (we are only human). He did run a 6.7 60 yard dash. We have had many scouts get a few of our faster lefty hitters at 3.8 or better on drags so I know the record is def not 3.8! You guys have to remember, this wasnt live in a game, the players knew on there last pitch they were getting timed so I am sure and hope some guys tried to get out of the box a little earlier than normal. All the scouts had there own stop watches on each kid, this was a data base for the players and our RBAWEST staff and for any other scout that did not attend that asked for the stats. Hope this helps you guys.
Midlo,

I never time bunts unless I happen to get them. Reason is that you need to start the stopwatch when you see the bat going forward. If you wait for eyeing contact, or worse yet sound, you're way too late.

It is not unusual to have very fast H-1 times on a bunt. The body is already moving towards 1B. When a time is reported it is either H-1 on the swing or it has to be listed as a bunt. This could be as much as .4 or more different on the same runner.

To answer your question... I was getting those H-1 on the bunts... First one 3.8 to 3.9... Second one 3.6-3.7 He can really run! I would guess he is close to 4 flat at times on the swing, which is a big plus tool.

Chris,

Thanks for the explanation. That makes perfect sense. I know those kids can run, just a bit confused by the times and keeping it a secret.

You guys and the Cardinals do a great job! Please stay safe!
