After one has given a Coach a verbal agreement to come to the college, and the Coach has also agreed to a fall and spring roster spot,(this all without any BB scholarship money), what's the next step? There's no NLI, but should their be another step before the student athlete enrolls in the Fall?

Thank You

Continue to finish off the senior year strongly. Work hard over the summer to get stronger and better to be ready to compete for a position in the fall and spring.

Obviously you need to get registered with the NCAA, if you have not done already, and complete your school application, get your transcripts and SAT scores in, if applicable complete FAFSA and other scholarship/financial aid applications etc.

Thank you. Other then the application and financial aid process, would it be okay to ask for an official visit at the school during the season? Is that common?
Sure!

Stay in contact with the coaches, let them know how he is doing during his season, do you have a strong summer team lined up, if not, sometimes the schools will send out incoming freshman out to collegiate leagues to get ready for the the up coming year or they will just get you in contact with a strong team if you don't have a connection.

Great information! I do have a strong team lined up for the summer - so no problem with that. I think I will try to set up an official during the spring season as well to get a feel for the players and so forth. And it seems like contact with the coach about the HS senior season and so forth should be encouraged and common.
How does a senior line up a "strong summer season"? It seems all the showcase teams in our area have dropped the 2010 teams and their 2011 teams are their focus. I'm hoping sandlotson won't need to know this info as someone will recognize his talent and scoop him up this spring Smile But just in case, and since the signing period goes all the way to August, how/where do Seniors play during the summer? Other than Legion ball where he does have a good shot at playing since he was on the team last year.
In some areas Legion teams are pretty much very weak, some areas have Connie Mack teams, Palomino baseball teams, or Semi Pro teams.

There are also 18U teams which go off and play high profile tournament like Perfect Game over the summer.

In a lot of cases, these may not be "showcase" teams as many if not most would already committed to a college, be it 4 year or JUCO.

BTW: the last NLI singing period is in April-August 1(corrected), but players still can commit to go to a school as late as just before school starts.

Sandlotmom,

Our 2010 son is D3, maybe D2, ability wise (6.5 PG rating) and started the recruiting process only last Fall (sending letters, etc.). He will be playing on a Summer Team this summer that plays in a competitive league and attends the summer college tournaments. He's 17 and will be playing on an 18U team and hopefully that will get him some additional exposure.
As I've mentioned here before my nephew is a 2010 recruited walk on at FL D1 school. This past fall he and his parents were invited for an official visit, the same weekend as all other recruits. They were treated exactly the same as all the other players. No one knew he had not been offered a scholarship.

My nephew previously had been invited to play this summer on a very elite competitive team but was told during the official visit that the school would prefer him to play on a different team. There reasoning is that they have a personal relationship with the coaching staff and will be able to keep track of him and really control how much he throws.

Good luck!
