My son is currently a starting pitcher on JV as a freshman at a HS that is loaded with talent and will compete for the 4A(highest class) state championship each of the next 3 years. We have been zoned to go to a brand new HS next year that will have an outstanding coach but obviously have to build the program the 3 years my son will be there.

I'm interested in HS and College coaches opinions on whether it's better for a players recruiting to A)play varsity for three years at what will be a struggling program or B)play at a powerhouse HS program with state championship potential probably being a starting pitcher junior & senior year?

We lived your situation...in your city...several years ago and chose the school that had the lesser baseball program because my son felt he'd be happier and better educated there. As it turned out, the baseball team ending up faring better than expected, he received a first-rate education, and he ended up at the college of his choice.

TR's right. The quality of the program has less to do with your son's recruitment than his ability and dedication to the game.

In addition, your son's time playing for his high school will end up making up only a fraction of his overall baseball experience. The travel and/or legion team for which he will play in the summer and fall will give him much more visibility in front of recruiters and scouts. During the high school season, college coaches are coaching their teams. They come watch during the summer and fall.

Best of luck to your son!
