I received a pm from a webster regarding receiving recruiting materials and tickets to a basketball game at A div1 school I didn't realize until after response that his/her son was a sophmore. I do believe this is against NCAA recruiting.

So for all parents, you all should be aware of what is allowed and what is not allowed. Go to the NCAA and read the info in a students guide to recruiting, page 28,29 or 30. A freshman or a sophmore is only allowed to receive camp brochures and questionaire. Anything other than that is not permissable.
It would be your responsibility to inform the coach as it may have been sent in error. If you take that trip and use those tickets before leagally allowed, there could be consequences on both sides. The school would most likely get slapped with a recruiting violation but your son may not be allowed to be recruited by any school again.

This is just an FYI.

TPM, I learn something every day. I didn't know that.
Thanks for the heads up.

Well, I did say there could be consequences. I recently read where a student went into an office and was given a tour of the facility by an assistant. The assistant did not know that it was a dead period (football). The school got a ding but the student was not allowed to be recruited by the school anymore. Another incident where a boosters son made phone calls to the recruit and even gave a ride for a recruting trip. The recruit said he didn't know, school got a recruiting violation, the recruit no longer considered a prospect, anywhere. Innocense was not taken into consideration.
Although the rules are to protect recruits, it is always wise to find out for oneself what is allowed. Our kids have a lot more to lose than a school who knows they were not being "kosher".
Thank goodness for the HSBBW.
Although football recruiting is a lot more intense than other sports, all be careful!
TPM may be correct, but when mine was a soph ... and camp invites/questionairs began arriving I was certain they were "recruiting materials", he was being recruited & coaches would soon line up on the porch with offers in hand

regarding tickets, 3 allowed for an un-official visit .. any player is a "prospective student athlete" when he begins 9th grade, and can take an un-offical and have on campus contact at ANY age

my advice fwiw, go & have a great time, the sky is not falling

TPM, If I understand you correctly this means the dead period restrictions also apply to "on campus" contacts initiated by the student athlete. I was always under the impression there were no restrictions when the student/athlete initiated the contact and that contact was confined to the college campus. Punishing the student athlete for this seems unfair. This would mean the high school student athlete could become ineligible or at least unrecruited because an uninformed or unscrupulous coach made contact during the dead period. Who should educate these high school students? Should that responsibility fall on the high school coach?

Fungo,
Dead period is dead period, I do beleive no in person contact.

I'll find the article and send it to you. Give me time to search it out. I d beleive it is also listed in NCAA schools named for recruiting violations.

As we all know, lots more goes on in football, but just a good example that parents that have players being recruited know your rules. I think that it would be wise to go to the website and find out rules yourself. If you have questions, ask the HS coach or the NCAA.

Just like the parent who pm'd me about getting tickets, his son was an 09. Got to be careful.

Got this in an email from a recruiter today outlining the recruiting schedule.

Dead Period : During these time periods in-person contact/evaluations both on- and off-campus are prohibited. So, basically we can't do any recruiting during these times. No official visits, unofficial visits, no leaving campus to meet y ou, no going to watch games... nothing (except stuff that wouldn't be considered in-person like letters, text messages, phone calls, etc.).

In case anyone is interested here is the how they defined the other periods as well.

Contact/Evaluation Period: During these time periods college coaches can leave campus to evaluate and/or make in-person contact with prospects. As a junior (or freshman, sophomore, senior, for that matter) you can be evaluated during these time periods. However, as you may remember from my previous e-mail messages, college coaches cannot make in-person, off-campus contact with you until July 1st prior to your senior year. I will explain this in normal English so I don't over-complicate things: a coll ege coach can go watch a high school game during the Contact/Evaluation Period this Spring and evaluate you, but couldn't talk with you after the game. If there is a senior on your team, the coach could talk with him after the game because for a senior "July 1st prior to senior year" has passed for them. Make sense?

Quiet Period : Only in-person, on-campus contact is permitted during any Quiet Period. So during this time period college coaches cannot contact or evaluate any prospect (regardless of their grade) off-campus - they can only interact with you on their campus (like a camp, unofficial visit, official visit).

Jerseydad,
Thanks.
Of course the scenerios I have read about are mostly for football, it's really unbelievable what goes on. You can do a search on recruiting violations and everything comes up football. Schools rat on each other frequently.

I am not sure if cheating in baseball recruiting has as much impact as football. Football brings HUGE money to programs, baseball does not. It's a different animal.

Nonetheless, parents and players have a responsibility to make sure they know the rules, do not rely on someone else for advice. The parent wrote back to me, I was right, they thought his son was older. But I am not sure about the ticket thing. I suggested he get further info.
My point of this topic.
Thanks for the homework Jersey dad.

????? --- you're saying the unofficial visit is prohibited but the recruiting phone calls are OK?????

I think in our case he was saying my son could call him. He is an 08 so they can't call him yet anyway. I don't know about seniors.
