All,

Recently, my 2014 received a reply to an email he sent to the recruiting coordinator of a major D-1. The response was personalized, thorough and contained an attached questionnaire. What struck me as odd within the questionnaire was a request for my son's social security number.

I loaded and tracked the email header data and confirmed that the email was in fact sent from the university.

Why would this program need a social security number so early in their communications with a prospect? Am i being paranoid?

MLB questionnaire is a job application.    They will be paying you.  Again not necessary until the contract occurs, but it helps the MLB club to have it avail when that day comes, because they draw up the contract the day you are drafted.   They are required to keep it private like any other other employer.   I know, just went thru it this weekend..

SDBB,

Appreciate the response.  My son is a 2015 and won't be possibly signing a contract for two more years. Wife still wants to know if it is necessary under that circumstance?

Congrats to your son!

"Again not necessary until the contract occurs"   You can leave anything blank on the questionnaire.   Its mainly used to start a file on your son. and you will probably be filling a new one yearly (hopefully 31 times ea yr) as long as he's a prospect.

Perhaps any scouts can chime in, but the initial questionnaires for scout paperwork.  I would image they'd use SSN as a "INDEX"  (identifying unique number)
