My son's high school coach invited Juco, D1, D2 and D3 coachs (1 from each level) and had them talk about the process.
THE FOLLOWING ARE NOT MY VIEWS, BUT THEIRS (I did not agree with everything they said).

They stressed going to a school that was an educational and social fit. They said injury and'or caoching change could leave you on the bench. You must be at a school that provides you with what you want BESIDES baseball.
They said pick 5 places with that criteria. Call and write the coaches. Get a CD of your play made to send them. Do it yourself. Don't spend money on recruiting service stuff. The coaches aren't interested. They want a letter from the player describing himself. Also, coach referrals are excellent.
They say showcases are a waste of time and money. Go to one or two at most. Pick your spots. College camps run by the schools are best, even though many of them are stricktly money makers.
They were stressing not spending a lot of money on any of it, including lessons. Repetition with a purpose, positive repition was good. So you do need a coach to get your mechanics right, but then work on your own.
Don't play for a scholarship. Play because you love to play. There isn't a lot of money around anyway. Only 5% of high school players play in college. ACT's and GPA mean big bucks. Tje coaches can help you get money, but only if you have the grades.

It was interesting. I asked about showcases and they were anti showcases. But they never really addressed where you go to be seen if it isn't showcases. They pushed American legion ball as a great way to improve and help you get to the next level.
AGAIN, NOT MY OPINIONS. I hope this helps.

Interesting point about American Legion ball. I guess I felt that Legion ball was taking a back seat to Travel teams during the summer weekends. Are the majority of top players bypassing Legion and playing on travel teams?? Sure does sound like it when you talk to players and where they are looking to play...few mention Legion, which is unfortunate.
I don't know if the coaches want to be part of this forum. One was formally from Valpo, I won't say how long ago. All the other programs are local and have been mentioned numerous times on this board, some currently on other threads about facilities.

The coaches liked legion better than some of the more expensive travle programs. My son has had good experiences in travel. I like many of the managers, coaches, players and parents from big travel programs. All I am saying is these guys said you get more bang for your bucks at legion. You are playing some mature college age kids, are seeing more consitent pitching. You also get that in the travel programs, of course, but the travel teams are generally more expensive. These guys were big on not spending too much money.

Pardon the intrusion, please...Seems like the above statement may also be their way of giving a "hint" about their own schools/programs...maybe they don't spend too much on players, either....
Not trying to be cynical...only to let kids & parents know how vitally important it is to do all the research possible on any schools that they are really interested in, & that it's a 2-way street...go where they really want you (and that's usually shown in $$$'s!)
Taken slightly out of context. They were trying not to have the parents spend a lot of money. They did a very good report on how to get the best financial situation for your kid. They talked about web site s that offered non-athletic scholarships and again, they emphasized work in the classroom. The better the grade point average, the more money is out there.
