Does redshirting always have an academic or medical basis or can a player get redshirted if he had minimal play, i.e. a few at bats? If so, what is the criteria for redshirting based on play time?
If you touch the field, the only red-shirt you can get is a medical. You can be red-shirted before the season begins for various reasons such as team has a lot of depth at a position, they want you to grow/mature, develop. My son was red-shirted this way his freshman year. But once the season begins and you throw 1 pitch or get 1 at-bat, you lose all red-shirt opportunity except medical
