You might want to mention the division you are asking about (DI, DII, NAIA) to help people give you a specific answer, BUT ... I think the answer is that at the levels which permit redshirting, one at-bat or field appearance in one game makes the redshirt unavailable for that year. Medical hardship/injury is a different story - that one depends on date and # of innings played.
This is my opinion. If player is thinking of transfering for next year, taking a redshirt would not necessarily in the players best interests.
Putting ANY time in, is better than no time. Sitting out a year maybe be a bigger setback than playing just a few games.
I also wouldn't mention any transfers as yet, then you will get NO playing time.
If the player has had an appearance, that counts as using the year of eligibility. The number of games/innings is only used for medical hardship issues. For a player to redshirt for non medical/playing time issues, they cannot participate in any game. So if this player were to transfer, he would have 2 years of eligibility based on your information. Having played this year, there would not be a way to preserve that third year.
