It's my understanding that D3 schools are not allowed to redshirt freshmen, yet I could understand for some kids having an extra years growth could be very helpful. How do the D3 coaches handle this issue?
Usually, people redshirt for a couple of reasons. Either they are injured and don't want to lose a season, or there is a junior stud playing in your position, and you won't see anytime at that position this year. I have never heard of players redshirting in the anticipation of a growth spurt. Doesn't make sense to me, because the growth spurt may never come, and what then? Just my opinion.
We visited a D3 school this past weekend and the coach said D3's can not redshirt. Many D3's have a JV team to allow kids to continue to develop, but it counts against the 4 years of eligibility.
