Does anyone know if redshirts will count toward the max 35 roster according to the new NCAA rules? In other words, say a school has 5 redshirt players. Could the program conceivably have 35 roster players plus 5 redshirts? Or would they have to keep their numbers to 35, redshirts included? (I am aware of the max 27 scholaship player rule.)

JMO, but I think we will begin to see less and less redshirt in the near future, most likely depending on the position. Coaches are not going to be willing to give out 5 year scholarhsips, they won't be able to afford it.

Based on this am I to assume that a RS player is still receiving their scholarship benefits even though they might not be playing?
Yes, JD you are correct.

The redshirt year allows you the fifth year, but more and more AD's don't want baseball players hanging around for 5 years. And if so, most likely you will get NO money or just a small stipend your fifth year. Medical hardships are different circumstances.

TR,
I might be, but if you speak with any D1 coaches or the NCAA directly(you can call and ask) the money distribution is their concern and has received overides to have another meeting to open discussion. The do not want teh NCAA to tell them how to spend their funds and do not want even distribution of those funds in the way of scholarships or a scholarship limit (27). Not sure about teh 11.7 but I don't htink they want that to change either. Most don't want the recruiting field to become an even one.

No one has any complaints about roster size, this was one of the reasons WHY they made a roster size mandatory because some schools were overstocking. BTW, does anyone know if conferences put a limit 9maybe a suggestion) on roster size? Someone told me the ACC did, not sure if that is true.

If I am wrong, have no reason to admit I was wrong.

I had an interesting conversation with a coach this weekend about this subject. His positioning was in line with what TPM said, most coaches grip is with the mandated minimum allocation of funds.

I was really surprised when he mentioned that the person from his university (an academic) that was on the fact finding committee didn't even bother to talk to him about the situation before signing off on the new rules. Needless to say the coach and the AD of his school was not very happy.
Ob,
There is no such thing as a medical redshirt, it is called a medical waiver and has to be validated by a doctor and submitted and approved by the athletic department.

It does give the player a 5th year as long as he has not participated in more games than allowed the same as a redhirt.
jmepop,
I think that there is a game limit like everything else, might want to check with the NCAA or compliance at the school.

I am pretty sure that medical waivers are not given out liberally, most likely season ending surgery would qualify. I know some players who had medical issues (sore shoulders, knees) but were not given medical waivers, and a few I know burned a year by rehabbing.

I am assuming that is why coach's want their players to disclose medical problems in the fall.
