Murphy didn't either. Obviously both coaches were looking to save a starter for Wednesday's game. Its easy to second guess a coach after the fact, but at the time, there was no telling how long that game was going to go.

What I find amazing was the low pitch count reported in the paper (at least for 9 innings). 104 for Ramirez and only 98 for McCarthy...thats less than 12 an inning for both. If correct, a fantastic performance...at least for the pitchers.
wow...I dont think Denbigh could have been any more bush league than they were today. Starting with a bunt when they were up 7-0 in the 3rd, and progressing to runners running dirt balls when they were up by 17. Now I have heard of the term playing hard, but that was a joke. Did Ingrahm really believe they had to run dirt balls and steal when they were up by 20 in the 6th inning?!

that kind of **** is unnecesary. Denbigh should be punshied for such unsportsmanlike play.

Wow the Beach really took it on the chin yesterday. Disappointing finish to good seasons, but Cox and Kempsville have nothing to be ashamed of.
As for the Cox game. I don't believe that bunting in the 3rd up 7 is a bush play. I remember a few region games over the last 5-6 years where teams have come back from 10 run deficits.
I have seen Cox many times this year and it seems to me that Cox is an in your face sort of team. They are often seen cursing on the field, throwing bats after striking out, taunting the other teams by staring in their dugout after scoring runs. I have even seen the umpires have to tell them to stop taunting other teams. My point is that if you play in this fashion it is going to come back to get you later. There are many people in the Beach who found this result just rewards for how Cox treats their opponents all year.
Now I don't know anyone very well over at Cox and I know no one over at Denbigh. Have not seen a game of either team. Perhaps one of the "baseball gurus" who frequent the board ( redbird, are you listening?) can pipe in on this. Is it considered "bush" for a team in a championship game to try to score and be in a position to score even when they have a substantial lead? My "just a parent who's kid plays" opinion is that you don't ever stop playing the game the way it is supposed to be played until the game is over. But with all of the unwritten rules of baseball, maybe I am wrong. Sounds like Falcon Dad has a case of sore loser. What do you guys think?
It looks like Denbigh missed the extra point. Big Grin

Bunting 7 runs up in the 3rd...no problem. If you made plays, you wouldn't be 7 runs down. Why complain about them giving you an out? In their defense, they are trying to expand their lead.

Advancing on passed balls...wouldn't it be more embarassing for a ball to roll 40' back to the fence and the runners NOT advance. To me THAT is rubbing your face in it.

Stealing...it depends on the score, IMO. It also depends on your pitching situation. I would have yanked my starting P to rest him and get some mound time for lesser guys.

Falcondad, what about Cox being punished for the unsportsmanlike play mentioned by beachbaseballguy?

Sourgrapes? Definitely.
Welcome back impartialbut. Haven't heard from you on this board since before the CHC-STC game.

FYI to all. falcon dad is NOT a Cox parent; however, I'm sure he was frustrated (as we all were) at how the game went and let that frustration carry over into his post. I'm sure after cooling off a little, he might feel a little differently.

I wasn't going to comment on this, but since it has come up, IMO, a bunt when up 7-0 is not "bush" in any way, nor is running on dirt balls...kids are taught to, and should, play hard and to the best of their ability, every second they are on the field. To not run on a dirt ball (unless specifically told not to) would not be doing that. That said, a coach can, and should, take some action when a game gets completely out of hand as that one did. He can certainly substitute freely and let some other kids on the team get an opportunity...I'm sure the parents of some of his bench players would've appreciated that. Maybe I missed it, but I did not see that happen except for the 3? pinch hitters in the 7th. Not sure I would've had my ace throw 7 innings in that situation either, but maybe there was a good reason...

Finally, to beachbaseballguy, the Cox players have been encouraged to be loud and supportive of their teammates all year and have done a great job of it. I have been to every game this year and have NEVER seen an umpire have to ask them to stop "taunting and opponent" and I can assure you that it would not be tolerated by coach Conroy or his staff. Have individuals expressed their frustrations and emotions at times during the heat of the game? Certainly.... as kids on all teams have. The Falcons' "just rewards" this season was a District championship as a result of all the hard work they put in both in season and out. This, despite a slew of player losses (mostly pitchers)that would've crippled most other teams. Still they always seemed to play the right card and find a way to get it done. Yesterday, they just ran out of cards. They'll be back next year. Count on it.
I have also watched a number of Cox games this year and I have seen this behavior from them. Denbigh played the way the game is taught and Cox didn't. Denbigh's pitcher threw consisteant 85-86 mph with a devastating breaking ball that Cox couldn't touch. He kept Cox off balance all night and Denbigh played exemplary defense. They hit the ball and ran the bases with precisian. Denbigh impressed me with their dignity in the dugout and on the field, no jawing or trash talking. After scoring, Cox's Amorosso stared into the Denbigh dugout like he had just done something special, all he did was get thrown out at 3rd base, which the umpire missed. There is a picture on the front page of the Daily Press Sports section, Peninsula, that shows the play. Cox has a very good team that plays hard but their "cocky" attitude and their sportsmanship leaves a lot to be desired. Talk in the Newport News shipyard is " they got what they deserved.", a good butt kicking. I'm a Beach Dist fan and we do play a good brand of baseball but both our teams lost last night and I think that opened some eyes. There are two good teams playing for the Regional Championship and they deserve to be there
Chris, I have to say that I was standing by the first base dugout during their game at FC and actually saw the field umpire run over 50 feet to tell Cox players to stop yelling into the FC dugout and only cheer for their own players. Unfortunately it was the same player that Player 8 referred to in his post. Maybe this behavior will cease to exist without this player around.
I wish Cox well next year as I do the whole district. I just believe that the rest of the district would appreciate it if they showed any of the character that you so proudly refer to on the bottom of your posts, because this year's team (although very talented) were horrible sportsmen, and that starts from the top.
The FC-Cox rivalry is heated to say the least...probably unlike any other in the Beach. Emotions run very high and coming off our first win over the Patriots in a LONG time, the rematch at their field was very intense. There may have been some individual "talk" going on, but I can assure you it was coming from both sides ...and from some individual "fans" on the FC side as well (taunting Cox players by name as they came to the plate). I'm sure many of the real FC fans were embarassed by the actions of those individuals and I would never brand an entire group as unsportsmanlike for the actions of a few. For you to do so with an entire group of hardworking kids is not only wrong, but to do so without having the cajones to post your own name is cowardly. I was also at that game and never saw the umpire say anything to the bench...other than to tell them that they could only have one player on deck...after being prompted by Coach Stubbe to do so. Interestingly, the FC players were called to task for the very same thing when THEY came to bat. A quick conversation with my son just confirmed that no such admonishment to the bench occurred...at least not that he heard. I can only guess that what you saw (if you saw anything at all) was the result of the actions of an individual. Once again, I was at EVERY game. The players are loud, no question, but were not unsportsmanlike in my view. They shook hands like any other team after the game and I saw no taunting of the other team during or after the games. I did see what I considered to be unsportmanlike actions at times from individuals on just about every team. Unfortunately its the nature of the beast when dealing with HS kids...especially whem their so called "role models" do things like yelling "Mine!" when running bases behind an infielder attempting to catch a pop-up, or driving an elbow into a MIF while attempting to break up a DP.

I'm always curious as to what motivates someone to register and participate on these forums. There are those that do so in order to ask questions, some to spread their knowledge, some to just brag about their kid, but there are always those negative few that just want to attack kids, coaches, teams, etc...This site has a great feature where you can actually read the first post made by anyone on this forum...that is usually a very good indicator. This site is actually pretty good (you wouldn't believe some of the things that are said on some of the HS wrestling forums). Sometimes it tough (I'm guilty as well at times) but lets try and keep it positive.
It is obvious that everyone has an opinion, and if you are a fan of a particular school it is easy for you to justify their behavior.
As for me hiding behind a screen name and being cowardly, I am a nobody. My son played for Cox a long time ago and I have enjoyed beach baseball since. I am very aware of the Cox FC rivalry and was actually pleased in the outcomes this year. It had been a long time since Cox had won in that series. I guess I am not used to all of the antics and loudspeak by the Cox players this year. After watching them it seems as if they are allowed to throw bats and curse on the field. It bothers me that a coach could put winning in front of sportsmanship. But if you have seen it from other teams, Chris, maybe I just have to adjust to the style of play.
You can try to twist my words all you want, but you know I in no way am justifying those type of actions. I suggest if you really are upset with something you've seen Cox do as a team, take it up with the coach. As a team, they are enthusiastic, loud, even a little obnoxious at times, but not unsportsmanlike. I'm done. I hope you are too, this is not what this forum should be about.
The coach is as bad as the players. Where do you think they, the players, learned it from ? I do agree, we need to put this to bed. All the teams played well this year and we did have some suprises in the district tournament, which I think was good. We will start working towards next year and, hopefully, we will do better in the regionals.
all i have to say is that if bayside and theyre stud centerfielder zaine jack were in regionals things would be alot diffrent. the marlins should be a lock next year as state champs with the highly talented and very good looking zaine jack in center and the crafty napoleon dynamite look a like john deschamps on the hill along with ace ryan davis ( who also thinks he is a gansta. haha and at 1st mr. thrown away the game himself michael wiley. look out fro the marlins to improve on that 10-12 season this year with a perfect 29-0 season next year.
