15 year old high school sophomore lefty pitcher having surgery on torn labrum, and will miss this season. (Thanks to those who gave advice.) Same injury kept him from pitching last summer, and now he wants to transfer and repeat. Figures that a 6'2" 2009 lefty pitcher with three years of high school ball ahead of him will get better rating at showcase upon his return than a 2008 graduate without much of a record. He is very highly motivated, and wants to play college baseball. Any thoughts or advice?

I really dont like to see kids repeating a year of school in high school for athletic purposes, but that is just me. I can understand it if it is to help the kid academically but if it is purely athletic I really dont see a lot of good in it. If he is as highly motivated and wants to play college ball badly enough then it would see as if he would come back and work extra hard to make his last two years count. Im not sure what the recovery time is for the injury, but I am guessing he will probably have at least a year and a half to prove to scouts that he belongs...there have been players who have done more with less.

Good luck to you and your son in whatever you decide.
Check with your local State Atheltic Association. In Florida, and like mentioned by topdogfan, many state associations start the clock when a student athlete enters the 9th grade. You repeat a year and you have lost a year. You must also look at the date of birth aspect as many associations have a strict age cutoff.

Start the rehab process as it can be done. Unless the student athlete is having exceptional difficulties with the academics, it is not a good idea to set a kid back for sports reasons and that is why the states have adopted these rules. They feel it is important to keep kids on track for a normal graduation date with their peers and not make athletics a reason for kids to jump around from school to school and to alter their graduation timetable.

Best of luck in the future, I hope everything works out for the best!
