Coach Patrick Davis at Texas Military Institute in San Antonio fits this description to a "T." He is not only the head baseball coach, he is the AD. I think he still teaches, as well. I know he works to develop the "whole student athlete," not just ballplayers.
One of my coaches on my travel team is absolutely the best!. He's 6'8 / 350 lbs and coaches 3rd base for us. He has a tremendous passion for the game and the kids that play it. Besides being a great communicator and teacher of the game, the kids love him to death (and these are 17 & 18 yr. olds mind you), he's always upbeat, positive, and smiling, he makes even the most tense situations for the kids seem like no big deal.
One of his famous speeches before each game is " play hard, and let's have some **** fun!" I hope I never get to old to appreciate seeing this monster of a human being diving on his belly at 3rd like a trout, trying to get the runner to slide, or jumping up and down waving his right arm yelling "score, score, score" to the runner approaching 3rd base, it's the best!
It's great to know that coaches like Coach Kennedy are still out there. Hopefully you and yours can run into one just like him someday.
Frank Coit Head Coach San Diego Prospects Baseball Club
Our pitching coach is a former major league player. He donated some big bucks to improve the field. He has been a volunteer pitching coach for the past 3 years and works with both the varsity and jv guys. Comes to almost all practices and games (mind you, his kids are in elementary school).
Pitchers who have moved on to college call him all time -- he's always there. Wrote letters and made phone calls for guys who were trying to find a college program.
The guys all say that the best thing about "coach" is riding on the bus with him and listening to his stories.
Best of all - he's taught all the kids that what is important is being a MAJOR LEAGUE PERSON, not a major league player.
I know this was started in jest, but it made me think about something I sent Bob a few years back about my sons' coach - he was kind enough to print it and here it is:
I have to talk about my old Hs coach here. His name is Chris Phatenhauer, and i played for him my junior and senior year at a small Lutheran HS in Las Vegas. Coach Phetty was always there for us. He cared about each one of his players like we were his own kids. He always wanted to make us better players, students, and people. Whenever anyone would want extra BP, fly balls, ground balls, ect, he would come early to practice or stay late to help us out. His players were always first for him.
Not only was Phetty a great person, but he was one great coach. He had a gift for teaching the game and motivating, and he would always get the best out of us. In the 2 years I played for him (he joined the program my junior year) we became Nevada 2A state runners up junior year, then my senior year we won the state championship with a 33-5 record.
He is also coaching a college summer team that I plan to play on, and I am really looking forward to that. I would also like to wish him luck in the future, as he is leaving my old HS's baseball program to start up a DII program at Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO. I just couldn't see this post and not mention Phetty.
