Twice I have picked up the newspaper (VA Pilot) and seen scores that were not close to the actual game. Saw one last week where the home team scored many runs in the firt inning but the paper 1) listed the final score as being less than it really was and 2) listed the runs in all different innings.

Hypothetical example, the winning team scores 10 run in the first inning and wins 10-0 but the paper listed the final as 7-0 with the runs being scored in the first 4 innings. Both games where the newspaper had it wrong would most likely be classified as blowouts. The only thing I can think of was someone was downplaying the final score.

My question is how does this happen? Who calls in the information to the paper? I am not blaming the paper, but why would a score be changed and the runs be listed in wrong innings? I have personally been to two games, tracked what happended, and upon reading the paper the next morning, been at a loss for what I am reading? Anybody have the same thing happen or know the process for reporting scores to the paper?

I know my son's school sends out the final score immediately after the game which is followed-up shortly with a game write up...They don't send out the box score or anything, but certainly the final score and runs per inning are pretty obvious from what is sent as are any highlights...I have no idea what other schools do or how that particular paper got its info...
At one game I recently attended, the visiting team won and I heard the coach of the home team tell the coach of the visiting team, during the handshakes, to remember to report the many errors his team (the home team) had committed (obviously disappointed with his teams performance), which leads me to believe that it's the coach of the winning team that reports the scores...
In the Tidewater area, the winning coach usually calls in the score. Hits and errors are often under or overreported, but, at least, the runs should be right. That said, I have personally attended games (from start to finish) and paid attention to the final score, only to find the score in the paper to be wrong in every respect, runs scored, hits allowed and errors. Am very suspect about the stats that coaches report (and unfortunately use at all district selection time).
