Son (2013 LHP) will be attending a camp in Virginia next month and we plan to visit some college campuses in the area. Are coaches open to meeting with players during a campus visit without knowing anything about the player? The schools we plan to visit are mostly D2 and D3. We will visit the campuses regardless but it would be nice to meet with a coach and view facilities while there.

You will be surprised on how many coaches will meet with you. Most will respond and some won’t. Have your son send an email and let them know when he will be in the area and ask if he can meet with him and his family during a swing through the area. We did a swing through Nor Cal during the Christmas break and I was shocked on how many coaches took time away from their families and came to the campus to meet with my son and showed him around.
Asking to meet with a coach is a great way to assess the program. If the coach makes a point of meeting with you and is enthusiastic during your visit it is probably a good indicator as to the type of coach/person he is.

When my son was looking at schools; we made a trip back east and visited 4 schools in NC and SC. Three of the four were terrific. The 4th school the coach never answered or returned calls. We ultimatly got ahold of the recruiting director and set up a meeting. When we showed up neither the coach or the recruiting director bothered to show up. We met with a graduate assistant in the parking lot. Needless to say; this school was dropped very quickly.

It is your college experience. I can not imagine picking a college, especially for baseball, without visiting it meeting with the coach and get a sense of what your life will be like.
Similar story. We were on vacation back east and had arranged to meet an Ivy assistant coach who had coached CASon's Stanford Camp team. He didn't bother to show. We had taken about a day out of our vacation for that. However, the campus was interesting and in an interesting area so it wasn't that big of a deal. The assistant is no longer with that school so I won't mention the name of the school.
Thanks for the responses. I will have my son send out some requests. Should the meeting request include any specifics about his experience so far (HS and summer teams)?

2Bmom: It is the UVA Preseason Become a Prospect Camp. It should give junior a taste of what he is up against acedemically and baseballwise. I am also looking forward to seeing the campus.
OhioBB & FloridaBB:

Coaches recruit kids they like and believe will help their program. More often than not kids come from events that they have been to. However, there are 1,000's of kids that they will never see that could add to their program.

Make the appointment; when you get there it will be the time when your player can "tell his story." Show up with three things; an unoffical copy of your grades, a xerox of your test scores and a 1 page resume of who you are as a baseball player. He may not ask for any of this but you will be prepared once you have met him.

Dad it is OK to make an introduction; but get out of the way, keep your mouth closed and let your son tell his story. Your objective is for your son to make a positive impression. If the coach likes him, likes what he sees and hears he has lots of ways to evaluate him as a baseball player.

This in substance what we did with our son. Out of this he generated 4 very good opportunities (including two small scholly offers from schools that never saw him play).
