I agree with Bee. Camp list are not recruiting list. Camps fall somewhere between the ability to throw a 60 mph fastball and the ability to strike out in recruiting importance. However name recognition is a recruiting necessity and the opportunity to communicate with the coaching staff should not be overlooked in this instance. Since the school is one of interest I suggest your son respond via regular mail ---- I think it shows class. It will probably be opened and “chunked” by an administrative assistant but it could generate a “comment” in the process. Remember recruiting is a process --- not a single event.

Thank you for your input. I do agree this is not a recruiting list but he has never made any contact with the school so he was not sure if that was away for them to show interest.

This is new to our son and the family so we were not sure if it was taboo to respond by email or letter, as he cannot make the camp. Trying not to burn any bridges is all. Thanks again.

Schools accumulate names in various ways. The fact that the invite was unsolicited by you could mean that the school has received his name via a referal from a questionnaire sent in to the school by someone who feels he is a good peer player. One line that is found on nearly all questionnaires is "name two players you played against as juniors (in high school)", or something similar to that.

Anytime you get anything from a school, I would respond via regular mail, something like

Dear Coach____
Thank you for the invite to your camp. I will not be able to attend, but would like to know about your school and program. (something similar)

Sincerely..

You could also include a short letter of introduction with basic facts about player...if coach would like more information you'd be happy to send it. This creates another opportunity to communicate with the school. Include all of your contact info.

I don't think it is ever taboo to respond to anything you receive from a school.
