I bought a catcher's glove about 2 months ago and am wondering if I would be able to return it to the store. I don't really like it and it is still very very stiff. It is a Rawlings HOH the model that Joe Mauer uses. The glove is not dirty at all. I am wondering if you think that they would let me return it and get my money back.

Those HOH gloves are stiff. You've got to put a lot of work into softening it up, but it'll last longer than an already soft glove. If it still looks new and isn't dirty yet, that tells me you aren't putting in the time and effort to soften it. Use it for every practice and bullpen, then switch to your old glove for games. Use a glove mallet while watching TV, or play catch with it daily. It'll eventually work in.
My heart of the hide catchers glove took nearly a year of catching pens to break in. I was in no hurry - could have probably gone a little faster - but the point is - it takes time to break in a quality glove. I could not be happier with my HOH - great glove.

As a side note - has anyone else noticed that HOH pops louder than other gloves? My glove pops extremely loud - I can be catching a 13 YO throwing 60 MPH and it still pops loud enough that the other team hears it in their dugout. It is kind of fun to watch the other team's heads spinning when they hear kids warming up... Smile

I dont have a HOH but have a Pro Preffered and it pops loud. I love it when the other team starts to watch the pitcher as soon as they hear 1 pop. Good Stuff.

The store prolly won't take it back but heres what I did with mine.
1. Play catch with it as much as possible.

2. Make a glove mallet. Take a thinish longish piece of wood and screw and old baseball to the end of the stick and pound the heck out of where you want the pocket to be. I did this to mine so much that the dye from the leather is gone. It looked weird at first but now it looks pretty cool.

3. Buy some Dr. Glove and put 2 coats on with 1 week in between. Make sure its Dr. Glove though cause it seems to me that everything else adds weight. PUT NO MORE THAN 2 COATS ON THE GLOVE!!!!!!!!!. Thats important and thats why its in big letters. (I think Dr. Glove is made by Franklin, Im not sure)

4. Gather up all that change and go to a local batting cage. Go in the cage that throws the hardest. You know what Im gonna say. Get in your crouch and take as many sets of balls as you can and just catch them. You can even work on foot work and other stuff in the cage if you wanted to. Plus its kinda fun to see what its like to catch a 90 mph fastball. Oh be sure to bring your mask or they might not let you catch in their cages for liabillity and stuff.

5. Wrap your glove in sawran wrap with a 12 inch softball in the pocket when not doing any of the above

Doing these will help the leather soften up especilly the batting cage.

Do...
1. Play catch often
2. Massage your glove while watching TV
3. Apply Dr. Glove 2 times per Season after break in period.
4. Love your glove
5. Clean your glove after every game with a DAMP rag/towel NOT WET DAMP!!!!
6. Keep your glove out of the rain

Don't...
1. Soak your glove in water
2. Microwave your glove
3. Use Hot Glove (thats a real no-no)
4. Kick your glove
5. Throw your glove
6. Mistreat your glove in any way shape or form
7. Use GLOVE OIL (adds a monsterous amount of weight)
7. Use a unreasonable amount of Dr. Glove or any other glove oil. You souldn't be using oil anyways
8. Do anything stupid with your glove like see if it will soften if you put it out in a thunder storm
9. Let others put their hand in your glove

All these things put together will make a long lasting, soft, durable, everyone wants to use it because its so awesome that you have the awesomest glove ever and it should be in the hall of fame for best broken in glove ever in the whole entire world because no one does it your way and you rock and your awesome, *breath* glove. Man I'm good..

Treat your glove like a baby. If your good to it it'll be good to you. I think thats it. Any other questions or comments are welcome.

Thanks Always
