There is a Cleveland connection here. Herb Score may have been one of the most promising left-handed pitching prospects of all time. A liner off the bat of MacDougal unfortunately hit Score in the eye and his career was never the same. Hopefully, Gill and Herb can talk baseball again someday while they are up at the "show"
Gil also suffered an injury himself after being hit in the head by a line drive during batting practice in 1955. This eventually led to the loss of his hearing. Fordham losses a valuable member of its community.
I've read that Gil McDougald never really recovered from the Score incident and kind of lost his joy of playing baseball after that. He played a few more years but retired at an early age when he still could play.
One other point, in 1951 the Yankees had two promising rookie starters--Mantle and McDougald. Actually McDougald had the better rookie year hitting .306 with 14 HRs, 14 SB, and an excellent .884 OPS. He also hit a grandslam in the World Series. Of course he was surpassed pretty quickly by the other guy starting the next year.
