Earlier today, Towny Townsend passed away. I just got the call a short while ago. Here is the link to the local newspaper article: Towny Townsend passes away at age 54
I have had the honor to speak to him through a few posts in the Virginia forum and he was the epitome of courage and class. A great baseball man and person has passed.
Oh no......my heart literally stopped when I read your title. I am so very, very sorry to read this. I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Townsend, but I feel that we lost a great friend of the HSBB site. Prayers to the Townsend family in this time of great sorrow.
Not unexpected, but very sad news. Wish I could post some of the correspondence I've had with this great man, just so people could get to know what he was like. Then again, everyone who has ever talked to Towny pretty much has it figured out.
Towny Townsend - You have left us, but you will never be forgotten. Great is not a big enough word to describe him.
This is such sad news even though it's not unexpected. I had only corresponded with Towny through this site, but he seemed like such a kind and caring man. I do believe from my contact with him and others' comments that Towny was a believer and has gone to his great reward in heaven. Saying prayers for comfort for his family and friends. A great man who will be greatly missed.
By now many of you have heard that baseball lost a great friend and fiery competitor today.
Its tough news to swallow, but I can't help but think that Heaven has a brand new starting shortstop tonight and he is getting after it, tearing up two and rallying the team around him!
Coach "T" had a major impact on my life in ways that many may never understand. Far beyond just the game of baseball.
Cancer bonded us together even more than the great game of baseball.
Many have asked about plans for his funeral so I wanted to get something out to all of you as you have been loyal supporters of Towny in the past. Please pass this message on to others who have come to know him.
Funeral to be held at the Kemspville Church of Christ around 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 7th. A viewing is planned for Friday, but location will not be determined until Thursday so look for an additional posting.
The Townsend Family would like to establish a scholarship fund in Towny's name.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation in Towny's memory.

I had talked with Towny a couple of times through the site and will tell you I've met few gentlemen that were as pleasant, polite, and kind as him. His thoughts were never about himself, but always kindnesses focused on others. My most sincere sympathy to Towny's family and friends. May Towny rest in peace.
I seldom post anymore, but I can't express how my heart dropped when I read this thread.
My beloved grandmother passed away 30 years ago today, so it has been a day of reflection for me. I can also tell you that 30 years from today Towny will be one of those folks whom I will still feel a loss for his passing.
Some folks when they touch your lives, regardless how brief, REALLY touch your life. Towny was one of those people. My sympathy to his family.
I wanted to say something on behalf of my family. The things you people have posted online here mean a lot to me, my mother, and brother. We have printed all of these things out and will save them. Many of you I know personally, but many people have come foreward and shared priceless stories with me about my father. People that my dad passed by in his life that I have never met or had the pleasure to meet. It was nice to know that we did not house the burden and pain of his death alone. Thank You All. I have said it before on here, baseball people are truly the best people.
Billy - your kind thoughts are very much appreciated.
Again, my deepest sympathies on the passing of your father. My thoughts and prayers continue for you, your brother, and your Mom. May your Dad rest in peace.
