A great day for Illinois when corruption at the highest level is rooted out. Congrats to soon to be former Gov. Rod Bigliarvich on his new jewelry. I wonder how he'll accessorize those bracelets.

"The breadth of corruption laid out in these charges is staggering," U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said in a statement. "They allege that Blagojevich put a 'for sale' sign on the naming of a United States senator; involved himself personally in pay-to-play schemes with the urgency of a salesman meeting his annual sales target; and corruptly used his office in an effort to trample editorial voices of criticism."

That would be great, as long as our do nothing Senator Dick Durbin isn't successful in petitioning the President for clemency for the jailed former Governor. The clemency campaign might be the most work he's done since he got elected. Nice message to the public...we politicians have to look out for each other...no partisan politics there!
Having in an interest in political shenanigans, I find fascinating the coincidence of the Trib filing for bankruptcy one day and Blogo getting arrested the next. Particularly in light of the allegations in the affidavit regarding the IFA and a $100 mil tax benny to the Cubs.

I can see the smile on Royko's face right now.

What's more fun, watching the "powerful" taking a fall, or Christmas shopping? I'll take the former. What a bunch of knuckleheads.

In the news conference, the press asked the FBI special agent in charge if Illinois was the most corrupt state in the US, and the agent responded that although he didn't have enough knowledge on the other 49 to make that statement, he'd bet that Illinois is right up there, bucking for #1.
The Tribune filed for bankruptcy protection. This form of bankruptcy has more to do with their ability to move around money and restructure their company to fix debt.

I did a lot of reading on our governor today. Sounds like an indictment is soon to follow. There are a lot of accusations of bribes, kickbacks, etc. My particular favorite is the one where the governor won't let the Tribune sell Wrigley Field unless they fired all the editorial writers who were calling for the governor's head.

I think this is a great day for Illinois.

The only thing that could make me happier would be if Todd and Richie go down, too.

I thank God for Peter Fitzgerald, our former U.S. Senator....In an "It's A Wonderful Life" moment, can you imagine if he never was born? Or never decided to run for the Senate? If not for Peter, then Patrick (not related) would never have been assigned here. He's been a godsend for all of the good and decent people in this state. John Kass ranks right up there for me, too....not to mention Mike Royko, may he rest in peace. With a smile.

I am totally sick of the corruption in this state.....I hope they ALL get rooted out.
Well this is a ray of hope for Pontiac. Blagojevich, against all logic and advice of government officials, had been insisting on closing our prison and moving most inmates to a minimum security prison (Pontiac's is maximum security) that is not a facility nearly of the caliber. A government committee advised that it not be closed due to the fact there was no advantage to closing the prison and the impact to Pontiac would be devastating. The thought was that Blagojevich had a vendetta against our area's state representative, who tried and failed to take Secretary of State last election. He was singlehandedly making the decisions in our case, despite lacking any good reasons to do it.
My favorite quote of all by our esteemed governor came back in July when he accused reporters of asking stupid questions and shot back "I have nothing to fear but the TRUTH". Well, it looks like his worst fears just came true!

Some say it's a sad day for Illinois - I say it couldn't be a better day. And hopefully this is just the beginning. I think Rod also sealed the door on George's cell as well with this one...

I have a prediction for you...

Peter Fitzgerald will be promoted to Washington soon after the President Elect becomes the President. There may be things that could be dug up in Illinois that he may not want to come to light, and promoting the bulldog gets him off the case.
My bad, thanks for the correction. Smile

It's pretty interesting to put together the Senate Candidate numbers that the press release talks about with the actual players. Jesse Jackson's doing the backstroke now. I see where David Axelrod now says he misspoke when he told the press right after Obama vacated his seat, that Obama had spoken with Bigliarvich about who to use to fill the vacancy.

It's pretty obvious Valerie Jarret knew the score and could see what was coming based on Bigliarvich's actions when she withdrew her name.

Where are all our upstanding public officials that were part of all this wheeling and dealing? How come none of them stood up previously and contacted the US attorney? Hopefully there's plenty of mud to wear, because it looks like there will be plenty of faces to plaster it on by the time this is done.
Since the Reagan administration, it has been common practice for new presidents to fire all 92 federal prosecutors. Reagan did it. Clinton did it. George W. fired all but 2, one was in the middle of a terrorist case and the other was investigating Hillary Clinton's pardon activities. It will be interesting to see if Mr. Fitzgerald has a job after January 20th. I think that is some of the reason why he rushed in and got Rod a little early.

CoachB25, what do you know about Illinois politics? You live in Southern Illinois.

Heck, I live 4 miles south of I-80. I'm irrelevant to Illinois/Chicago politicians as well.

Why'd I have to "know anything?" I had a spare $50. Now, I might have to actually work the rest of my life!
Soon... after this bum gets removed...we, the taxpayers are going to have to foot the bill to change all those signs on the toll road that have Big-liar-vich's name on them. Why did we, the citizens of IL, need the Governor's name on them in the first place? So the next guy will put his name up there for two years at our expense, until the next election and then we will have to do it all over again. I really don't understand..........or maybe now I do understand why IL has no money.
Illinois not have money? What are you talking about? They spent millions trying to rid our society of the ugly scourge of seat belt violators in their famous "click it or ticket" campaign. I know I sleep so much better now.

Table 6: 2006 Number of Paid Advertising Spots for Click It or Ticket Statewide

Television advertisements 4,488
Radio advertisements 4,243

These numbers have climbed significantly since 2006. Your taxpayer dollars at work.

I get a kick out of this as well. Why in the world is there a sign with the governor's name on it at every entrance into the state? I haven't seen other states that have that..

Thanks to ol' blue eyes, Frank Sinatra.

Our Kind of Town?

Now this could only happen to guys like us.
And only happen in a town like this.
So may we say to each of you with your distrust,
As we hear from each one of you a hiss.

This was our kind of town, Chicago was.
Our kind of town, Chicago was.
Our kind of people stool,
People who now finger you.

Now each time we roam, Patrick is.
Calling us at home, Patrick is.
Now we just frown like a clown.
It was our kind of town.

Our kind of town, Chicago was.
Our kind of town, Chicago was.
Our kind of ra$$-ma-ta$$,
And it had all that cash!

And each time we leave, Patrick is,
Tuggin' our sleeves, Patrick is.
The Dirksen Federal Building, Chicago is.
Home of Fitzgerald, Chicago is.
One town that may let us drown,
It's not our kind of town!

I just want to put this in the present tense. They are spending millions. In our town, Troy, you'd better not drive around without a seat belt. Why? Well we're one of those "target communities" where law enforcement can make extra money via overtime enforcing that law. Both local and state law enforcement do so on a daily basis. We're also one of those "target communities" chosen to enforce speed laws. Therefore, our local enforcement writes THOUSANDS of tickets per month. Again, the incentive for the officer is that they get to work overtime BUT MUST WRITE 2 TICKETS PER HOUR. We have a weekly newspaper and one full page is devoted each week to putting the names of the speeders in the paper. IMAGINE ONE FULL PAGE.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe that State Reps/Senators are excempt from speeding tickets if they are in session?

It is pretty obvious things need to change around these parts (IL.)

The politicians want to you be connected via the TV so they can "buy" their seats thru advertising! Who are they kidding? If we are home watching TV...we are not out protesting all their ridiculous pork projects too.
CoachB25,

If you look at any of todays law enforcement reports that deal with traffic violations, you will see that it no longer is about protection or service, it's broken down to profit levels. My own community just recently went through the decision process about installing red light camera's or not. It all boiled down to how much net profit the cameras would bring in. They installed them in an intersection that hasn't had a fatal crash in over a decade, at least, and where any kind of crash is uncommon.

Read the "click it or ticket" reports. It talks about how many tickets an officer needs to write, at a certain fine amount, in order for the campaign to be considered successful. And these are put together by our government.

That's not leadership, we could hire an accountant to run our government and save ourselves a lot of grief under the current criteria.

In many respects, government has gone from serving the people, to threatening and fleecing the people.

Blago was a creep, is a creep and always will be a creep. I don't know how he was elected twice.

But, while you guys are writing about him and click it or ticket, the Vice President actually admitted to committing war crimes, and it is barely covered by the media.

Cheney said he helped clear the way for torture (waterboarding) which the United States actually prosecuted in the past with the death penalty. Everybody went "yawn".

It is astounding. He also admitted he would have pushed for the war in Iraq even if they had know there were no WMD's. So we still spend 10 billion a month, continue to take casualties for a war that was fought for reasons really only known to Dick and George.

I guess Blago and seat belts are inportant stories. But the loss of life and treasure in Iraq, along with America losing it's moral high ground is a great tragedy. And as these two (Bush and Cheney) brag about their actions, everone twiddles theri thumbs. I hope at at least someone attemps to bring these men to justice.
Just caught the press conference held by atty. fast Eddie Genson. Blago is right in line with the types that Genson has defended. He was just throwing mud at the wall hoping that some would stick. He said something about that the state should be paying him his fees and that our atty. general should be defending Blago, not trying to impeach him.

My wife loved every minute of the past case of accused rapist Gary Dotson, when then Gov Thompson held up her panties looking for semen stains. Well, this case we're about to bear witness to will be the biggest trial, with the biggest names in Illinois politics that we're ever going to see. Pull up a seat, grab some popcorn and enjoy the circus to follow.

Quoting a fellow hswebster "If you can read this thank a teacher; and because it's in English thank a soldier."

Well, just like most everyone else I got some instant gratification when Rod got booted out of office.

On the down side there were a whole lot more of them (not all of them) in that chamber who should have gone right with him but you can't have it all.

You can go a lot of places and you will never find the collective scum that makes up our State Government. Just watching some of those crooks get up on their high horses was enough to take the fun out of it for me.

We need the criminal conviction too, or we will be funding his pension for the rest of his natural life. Unbelievable but true.

If you saw his press conference after the ousting was complete, you realize the man is definitely the master of staying on his message. Still talking about how he was there to help the common folk. Yeah, right. People in the crowd thanking him for free health care for their kids and free public transportation for seniors... why are they thanking him? He didn't pay for it - we do!

I just can't wait to drive down the tollway and not have to look at those aggravating signs!

To all you common folk... Elvis has left the State House!
Rod..G'bye. And please, somebody smack him on the head as he's leaving. This guy is a bonafide goofball.

Pat Quinn..He's a very good man. Long time advocate for the people. He's humble, smart and a dedicated public servant. Let's see if he can do what needs to be done here...He has major respect on both sides of the aisle.

Why did Rod never communicate with Pat Quinn? Because Rod knew that Quinn was an honest guy with tons of integrity. Quinn would have checked Blag hard in any situation...best to keep your distance from a guy like that when you're an actively squirrelly individual.

I tried to stay out of this one since it is a baseball site but I have to ask the question. If everybody is against the ex-gov for what he did why is nobody asking that all the contracts he did for the state get rebid? The jobs filled with questionable donations given to someone else? If the tollway contract for ex required a $550,000 donation (brib) whwy does that contractor still get the work even though he passed on an extra $550,000 to you the taxpayer? Aren't the companies and people that paid the bribes for the work or government job just as guilty? Okay back to baseball.

Ironically, the only count he was convicted for was lying - the topic of this thread!

Disturbingly, I believe one juror here was bribed. Is there one non-corrupt public offical in Illinois? If so, perhaps they can follow the money trail to this juror because I would be shocked if there were not one.

Blago is facing potentially 300 years behind bars. He'll probably get seven to thirteen.

I wonder who won the lottery to be his cellmate? Only his hairdresser knows for sure.
