Maris was on a pace to hit well over 50 the year before the 61 HR in 1961. Then he was injured at midseason and finished the season with 39. (He hurt his leg breaking up a double play)

Mantle led the league with 40 in 1960. Had he not been injured in 1961 he might have hit more than Roger that year.
