I was just curious if a roster limit is a good idea.  I have experienced that having too many players is not good but it is more kids sitting the bench.  And the more kids sitting the bench the more kids are not playing and the more possible complaints the coach would get even if the team is winning.  I have had 22 on varsity and I have had 18 on varsity.  State playoffs allows a roster limit of 20 players but the regular season it can be unlimited.

Our younger sons's HS team won everything they could in CA his junior season.  They were ranked #1 in the nation by PG at the end of the year and #1 in CA by ESPN and others.

They had about 25 players on the roster and even expanded it by 2 or 3 for the playoffs with JV callups.  BTW, all 25 original players got plenty of chances throughout the season and played more than just a little.

Its a competitive private school where they can get as many as 80 kids trying out.  Our coach's philosophy is not to have a set number, but to keep all the kids that are good enough while explaining their likely role upfront.  Occasionally 1 or 2 decide its not worth it, but that is uncommon.

My son's high school coach would roster as many players as he thought could contribute. Then he would add seniors who played JV as juniors as long as they understood they were there to be part of the program, cheerlead and not complain about playing time. Over the course of the season injuries or rain makeup games usually caused the need to add extra players. At the end of the season top JV players would get called up to be part of the postseason experience. A couple pinch ran.
