I spent 9 years in Kentucky doing just that. We ran full speed / scale practices using the yellow dimple balls that you feed into a machine. Only thing we held up on was sliding / diving for obvious reasons. We told our guys to run past bags and fielders to get in tag position but not put a tag on and get out of the way.

The balls are pretty bouncy but it's not that bad. They will get on the guys pretty quick too which I think helps. It does rough them up pretty bad and I wouldn't use them in the machine ever again.

It's not ideal but it does beat using cloth indoor balls in a gym.
