Chris has decided that he really doesn't want to play baseball anymore. He said he still loves the game but he wants to try something new and different. He always wanted to play football and all his closest friends are football players, unfortunately he transfered to a high school that didn't have a football team. Last year at NAPS the football coaches were all over him but he played fall baseball.

Well this year after talking to the football coaches he decided it would be too much to try to play for the first time and juggle plebe year. But he also caught the attention of the rugby coach and one of his detailers is the team captain. Rugby is pretty close to football, right?

He told me that he was going to try out for the team, I thought he was crazy. But he is smart young man and he is going to do what is best for him.
I wished him luck with the try-outs and told him I support his decision.

He called me on Sunday to tell me that he not only made the team, he is the only plebe that is on the travel squad for a tournament this weekend in Montreal. If he stays on the travel squad he will be going to South Africa for spring break. Navy is ranked #3 in the nation and they have made it to the Final 4 several times.

So if there are any rugby fans out there I could use a crash course on the rules..LOL

Try this site for a crash course....and an apt term to learn about rugby it is.

Rugby Overview

Rugby is a fantastic game --- much faster than American football, the action just keeps on rolling. If you can find any tapes of the last World Cup (just played last Spring), have a look. It was an incredibly exciting tournament. Check out Jonny Wilkerson of England...what a phenom!

I might also add the players have gotten much better looking since 'my day'....

Rugby is a very serious game in SA, the squad will learn a lot. And have Chris let you know if heavy drinking and obscene songs are still the primary elements of the postgame celebrations! Wink
Rugby is HUGE here in Boston...all those Irishmen love to play...for 4 years while I would wait to pick my son up after BB practice I would watch his HS rugby team practice...very similar to our football with a little s****r and hockey elements thrown in...extremely rough...but if you are "tough" I would assume it would be great fun...lack of head gear and padding lends itself to many injuries...best of luck to your son on his quest
Thanks everyone for the info. I used to know some Rugby players back in college and do remember that their parties were LEGENDARY. I believe that the Navy Rugby team is in charge of bringing the Navy Mascot to the football games and they are (in)famous for their tailgate parties.

Paul as far as rugby players on the Mets...we could us a few in the starting rotation in da Bronx Zoo.
