During a recent game a batter ducked to avoit an inside pitch. The ball hit his bat, still in a batting position, and went fair without touching the batter.
The bases were loaded and the catcher picked up the ball four feet in front of home plate, tagged home and threw to first for the double play. The umpire called foul ball.
I asked what he saw to call the ball foul.
The umpire said that the batter made no attempt to hit the ball and by rule it was foul, even if it ended in fair territory.
I have not been able to find this rule anywhere but another friend said that the umpire was correct.
Has anyone else seen this or tell me where to find the rule.

Ask the umpire how any ball that is hit into fair territory is a foul ball if it didn't hit the batter. I'm hoping this is preteen rec ball where parents with good intentions umpire and not state certified umpires.

For future reference make sure this umpire knows home plate is in fair territory. And balls are fair or foul based on where the ball is, not where the fielder is positioned (other bonehead calls by volunteer umpires). Then thank them for volunteering.

Have him look at this site.

Gee did it go down as a strike or a ball? That is a rather nonsensical explaination.

Once had an umpire declare - "Foul Ball - home plate is in foul territory!" (Huh?)

My husband and son umpire and they read up on the rules and positions and watch games to watch umpires. They have both been complemented which makes me proud. Smile But anyway ... It's a good thing I don't go to the games because they still get yelled at.

I think most umpires want to do a good job and realize it's about the kids not them. Unfortunately, it's the bad calls we all remember.
