This rule is kinda like TASO football wanting to make sure the kids have knee pads that cover the knees.
Believe me, look at the players on friday night.
If they can pull them down and show the officiating crew that they will go down past the knees at the start of the game then they will allow them to play. By the start of the game, those knees are exposed.
It isn't enforced, let them play.
Same should go for the catchers, let them play.

This is a safety rule... cut me a break... this rule has been effect for years... catcher gets hurt and he does not have an approved gear.... I get to sit in front of the jury to explain why I let Johnny use the bad or wrong equipment? I say "we just wanted to let him play... sorry he got a concussion..." Jury says..... $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

If an umpire lets this go by he will get in trouble if they get hurt... oh yea so will the coach because at the plate meeting we always ask... "Are all your players properly equipped?" If the coach says yes, and I allow it... we are in the same boat that is sinking fast... Game this past on Friday night we threw out 3 catchers hockey masks on the same team... all three were cracked and screws missing holding the face mask bars... yep we were the bad guys because of this...

TASO football officials ask the same question in pre-game. "Are all of your players properly equipped?"
How many coaches say, "No, I've got 4 players that aren't properly equipped."
Properly equipped means they have all the required equipment to play the game. We don't go out and check every kids shoulder pads, etc....
If the equipment is damaged then sure, it needs to be replaced. I commend you for your action on the team that had 3 masks that were cracked, etc....
If a team shows up with a 2 piece helmet/mask that is in good condition, I don't feel like it should stop or delay the game. Just my .02 cents.....

The umpires checked bats, but did not check or enforce the catcher's helmets either before or during play.

Since I am a member of this chapter I will make sure it is brought to the attention of the chapter and an email is sent out.... thanks

You would be giving up a lot more than 2 cents if something happened. Why would you put yourself in this position????? If the batter wacks the Catchers head with the bat you would lose everything you had... no insurance company you had would cover you, no association would back you... you your partner and the coaches would be sitting there all by yourself with no excuses other then we wanted to "let'm play"... I am not willing to lose everything I have...

As a football official; yes we ask if everyone is equipped properly and according to rules. That generally reminds the coach to check a player to see if he is legal or they will tell us about a kid but how he is legal.

But as I am watching the kids warm up I am eyeballing their equipment. If it is not proper they are told to address it and if they can't; the coach is told. If a kid tries to play with a dark eye visor; he can't. PERIOD. The rule is simple and it is a safety rule.

Basketball we do the same. I would hope baseball umpires would also. I am confident they do.

I can't believe the coach and his parents let him play like that.

didn't see any parents on the Seagoville side.
I don't know why the umps and the coach let him play like that.

To the umps credit, however, they did make sure that nobody wandered outside of either dugout. Three times, the home plate ump stopped the game to have players make their way back inside the dugouts, but never once saw it fit to ask the catcher where the rest of his gear was. No way in he** catcher would ever take the field without a helmet. Shame on the umpire crew in this situation.

OK, another question.
If the athletes on the field are required to wear one piece masks, and it is due to safety concerns...... Then why aren't the umpires required to wear only one piece masks as well?
If we are truly concerned with safety on the field wouldn't it be something TASO umpires should enforce for their members too?

Because the catcher has a greater risk of injury: taking a swing in the back of the head. In time, I'm sure the umpires will be required to wear them also. Safety is the emphasis, ie. BBCOR bats next year, pro & college base coaches wearing helmets, etc.
Lastly, think of the situation: 2 umpires, 18 players on the field,
approx. 100,000 square feet to cover, bullpen & dugout responsibilities, etc. Coaches, parents, and players have to think about safety also.
