Here is the situation - runner on first attempts to steal and the catcher's throw sails over the second baseman's head and goes into centerfield. The second baseman throws his glove up and hits the ball in flight.

A) How many bases does the runner get?

I always thought it was three but the umpire ruled it was two because it was a thrown ball. A hit ball is given three bases.

B) Does the bases being awarded happen from where the runners were before the action?

When he said it was two bases and he put my runner on third instead of home I asked about whether the runner had taken possession of the bag yet - if so then he should have scored. It was close but I believe my runner touched second before the glove hit the ball (I know this is a judgment call but want to know for sure). The ump said possession doesn't matter because you count the number of bases awarded from where the runners were before the pitch.

Thanks

Not too hip to HS rules....as they differ from pro and colleges rules at times.....

but I would say the umpire was correct.....
"Detached Players Equipment" I believe....Three bases for a batted ball, Two for a thrown ball and One for a pitched ball.....

I would say he is correct in awarding Third Base....Check in your appropriate rule book...
It is a delayed dead ball, award is from location at time of infraction, and is two bases. So if your runner had touched second when the fielder threw the glove then he would score. The ball should be kept live and the runner can continue to advance. If he makes home then all is good. If the BU is awarding third then he is going to get that at least.
Agree on 2 base award...and as stated previously, the only question would be if the runner had acquired second.

Clearly judgment call, and in practice might actually be difficult to call...can imagine following the ball into second, the ball sailing high and having to rule on both events.

Depending on what else was going on, and in an effort to get this right, I might call time and confer with my partner to see if he can offer some assistance.......if not, then its on me.....

In the situation I am asking about both umps killed the play and gave my runner third base. Like I said I thought it was a three base award (not sure where I got that though).

When I saw he wasn't getting three bases I went into coach mode and started asking (and yes I was asking and not yelling and screaming because I have a ton of respect for both umps) about if my runner had taken possession of the base. Plate ump said you reward from where people were before the action takes place - which I had never heard of that.

It would have been a tough call on possession of second but I think he was in there because he is a very fast runner, got a great jump and the catcher scooped and double clutched the throw - still was close though.

So am I totally wrong on the three bases?

Thanks guys.
