How does the first baseman get a signal to back pick? I know the catcher gives the pitcher one but how does the first baseman know the back pick is coming?
We would have the first baseman move at his discretion (after a verbal cue which was "bare down") and the catcher would drop his mitt to trigger the move by the pitcher.
If the 1b is signalling the catcher, he can use verbal signals. He should fake right toward 2b to relax the runner and 1b coach and then move quickly to the bag for the catcher's throw. It is important to provide a signal to the RF to back up.
The 1b controls this play. If it is the pitcher, then we have another signal for RHP and for LHP.
