Discussion we had over the weekend about defending the runner on 3rd and a walk. Maybe doesn't happen so much in HS ball, but runner jogs to first, rounds the bag and takes off for 2nd. We were discussing several plays for this.....pitcher looking the runner back to 3rd then tossing ball to the 2B who is stationed in close proximity to the base line, etc.

Someone made a point to just call time out after ball 4. Umpire will want to wait until runner reaches 1B, then call time, preventing the dash to 2nd.

Thoughts?

That's kinda a little league trick where kid's don't throw and catch well enough to keep up with a player running. However if your playing a team that will try this at the HS level a crisp throw and catch should easily out run a player. Try this: after ball 4 have the catcher throw a strike to 1B and tag runner as he rounds the bag.

At the HS level, this is so rare that my team would be surprised by it, and probably not recognize and react until the sprinting runner was 1/2-way to second base, at which point I hope that our guys would do what they're supposed to do against a first-and-third leave-early-steal...

But realistically, our 2B would probably be late getting to the basepath to receive the ball from our pitcher.  Hopefully, after checking the runner at third our P would throw to our SS at the bag, to begin a rundown.

Amen to the above but the rest of the posters make great suggestions.  This is typically a LL strategy but it can be effective at other levels because it's so daring and you never cover it in practice.  You just hope they realize it's just a 1st / 3rd leave early play and treat it as such.

I like the whole throw it to first after ball four idea because it will stop the runner.  Just have your first baseman stand there staring at the runner on third until the batter reaches first.  Then get the ball back to the pitcher and proceed.

I hate having LL kids call time because they will turn that into a crutch to stop the other team instead of learning how to play the game to stop the other team.  No lie but I saw an entire LL use calling time to stop base runners.  Ball hit to the fence and as soon as the OF picked it up they called time.  Worst thing was the umps (not real ones - just some guys out of the stands or HS kids) would grant time.  Just a ridiculous situation overall.

Teach them how to play the game right and let them stop runners by making good throws.  Don't get caught up in winning at all costs mentality where you take shortcuts........ok rant over with and not directed at the OP - I promise LOL.

Just a couple things here.....first understand you don't call time.....you request it, only the umpire grants it....small point maybe, but just because you say time, does not mean it will be granted......

If you request time, and if it is granted, it will only be after runner reaches first and the action is relaxed.....as stated in the OP, if the runner jogs to first, rounds the bag and takes off for 2nd, then time would not be granted as the act of calling time by an umpire is not to aid the offense or the defense....

Same result if the defense throws the ball into the infield and the infielder tries to call time to stop play......no time request would be given.....
