A pitcher is in his set position and the runner on second suddenly takes off running towards third. Pitcher sees this and throws to third where the runner is tagged out.

However, the ump calls a balk after the tag and awards the runner third base anyway.

What could have happened to cause this call? This happened to my son at a high-level showcase and we can't figure out what could have caused the call. It seems apparent that the runner must have noticed soemthing, otherwise who in their right mind would take off running when the pitcher is in the set??

Any possibilities on why a balk would be called here?

Unfortunately, there isn't enough info here to say why the umpire called a balk. If he was calling it because he felt the pitcher threw to an unoccupied base he would be incorrect. The pitcher can throw to an unoccupied base to make a play on the runner who was attempting a steal in this case. Other than that it's a "had to be there" thing. The pitcher may have done any number of things to warrant the balk call.

The runner didn't neccesarily notice a balk but rather timed your sons delivery. That is the sign of a good baserunner. I would recomend to your son to mix up his looks to first and second base. As for the balk I have not the slightest idea what your son did. It could have been one of many things.
