In Mark Johnson's first year as Bearkats coach, Sam sweeps the Southland Conference tournament, then reaches the regional finals before falling to Ole Miss.

Congrats to the websters with sons on the Bearkats.

Looking for great things from Sam in the coming years.

Regarding the game against Southern Miss in the Regionals, this was in a local paper covering their their Southern Miss team....we are glad that Sam Houston is getting well deserved accolades. This was also on the katfans forum.

AFTER A COUPLE days of reflection, what exactly was the 12-11 Southern Miss loss to Sam Houston State in the NCAA Regional?

No choke

# It was not a choke job. It wasn't like the Golden Eagles were kicking the ball around. Sam Houston State just hit the stuffing out of the ball. It laid off pitches that barely fell out the zone. It ripped good pitches to the opposite field. The Bearkats can score runs - they threw 13 up on the board against Ole Miss 50 minutes later.

# It shut everyone up who dogged the Bearkats going in to the regional, including me.

I wrote last week, "The Bearkats are just happy to be there." Shows how much I know. Actually, it shows that I and many others failed to realize their first-year coach, Mark Johnson, had coached Texas A&M (where he coached for 21 years) to two World Series, had 13 regional appearances and had a 914-455 career record. Sam Houston State may not have had the most storied baseball tradition - regional appearances in 1987, 1989 and 1996 - but Johnson sure did.

Congrats to Mark Johnson and his coaches and team. We can't wait for Matt to be under his leadership and mentoring.
