Jesuit baseball team’s bid for perfection came to an end Wednesday night.
Sarasota got a stellar pitching performance from senior right-hander Eric Williams and rolled to a 7-0 victory at Sarasota’s Ronald K. Drews Field, handing the Tigers, the nation’s top-ranked team, their first loss of the season in their regular-season finale.
Jesuit (23-1) managed just two hits against Williams - a two-out single in the fourth from Jimmy Falla and a one-out single in the seventh from Greg Dupell. Williams also struck out six.
The Sailors scored three in the first - highlighted by Garrett Custons’ leadoff homer - to get off to a great start, and the Tigers defense didn’t help in the later innings, committing a total of five errors.
“[Williams] was able to get three pitches over for strikes, and we never really gave ourselves a chance defensively. We put ourselves in a hole early, and it kind of took us out of our game a little bit and we weren’t able to do the little things that we were able to do all year,” Jesuit coach Richie Warren said. “That being said, 23-1 is a great regular season. Whether we lost the first game or the 15th game, we’d be pretty high right now if we were 23-1. It just stinks that we lost the last one.”
Jesuit returns to the field next week in the Class 5A-District 10 tournament at Jefferson.
