When pieces of the bat go flying, it's almost always a maple bat. You're equating "maple bats" with "wood bats".

For some reason, people won't understand that wood bats per se aren't a safety problem--thin-handled MAPLE bats are the culprit.

Those of us who played with wood back in the day know that ash bats seldom generate flying spears when they break. Usually, they remain in one piece when they crack. No big deal.

An MLB study found that maple bats were nearly ten times more prone to multi-piece failures than ash bats.
