Was in the chat room last night and was asked some questions by 05 pitchers' dads/moms about showcase schedules and tired arms. Since our son was incredibly busy last summer, I thought I'd share a little on how to make it work.

We did not find a single event (PG, T1, Area Code, etc...) that had anything but the best intentions with regards to taking care of pitchers. BUT, they need to know in advance what your son is doing. They will work with you to schedule his innings in their event IF they know what his schedule is. But they cannot work miracles, so you need to use a little common sense in preparing/resting your son for the events.

I talked to a mom whose son ended up at Rice (national champions!). He didn't make his Area Code team though because he wasn't rested heading into the tryouts. They didn't understand the importance ahead of time. Sometimes this means holding your ground with your son's summer coach in the face of an important game (not a problem in our case). A good summer coach should understand and be willing to work with you as well.

Most important thing is to keep your son healthy and rested between appearances. All of these organizations want that to be the case as well.

PGStaff may have some additional pointers or comments.

Rest is very important. I agree.

Last summer, early on we talked to BK's summer coaches about "already scheduled events" that son would be attending...and the summer coach worked it so that our son did not pitch too close to the showcases or Area Code scenarios.

This was very helpful and it also shows that a summer coach does in fact have the interest of your son in check...

I think that only once did it almost cross over with a tourney the guys were in ....and they needed the pitching, but son was gone....still they hadn't planned on having to play near as many games as the tourney gave them...as things unfolded...

Many kids come into showcases not in the proper shape to show their true abilities

They need to have a few days off prior to the event so they can be on top of their game

We have our on field coaches talk with all the pitches before we commence action so we know who has what in the tank -- sometimes waiting until the second day is best for some so as to have one more day of rest.

The you have the kids and parents who don't tell you the full story and they wonder why Johnny Boy's fastball has lost some pizazz

Good post Justball. A perfect example of being honest, PG asked my son to attend National this summer. Since he was there travleing with his summer team he accepted. My son was coming off of two days rest and PG knew about it so his innings were adjusted between his game commitment and National. They were even nice enough to mention this in their report.
Best advice, make a plan as to which showcases are important, let the coaches know and then go from there to give sufficient rest in between games.
