Cutting scholarhsips saves face. Gives the player an opportunity to leave without the coach getting the reputation of cutting players.

Also cleans house, a coach is not going to give a player 33% if he only gave him 10-15% when he first came, especially one that will most likely not be an impact player.

The whole thing is rather sad, IMO.
Here is my fear…

…with less flexible roster sizes

Are we beginning to see more roster “churning”?

Are we beginning to see deeper, quicker cuts taken from known non-impact players….in order to bolster the freshmen classes (potential impact players)?

Might we begin to break the unwritten but common renewal for returning players?

I hope not.

I know that such moves would reflect on a program, but some of the top programs over-recruit and still continue to draw because they win and produce drafted players.

Cool 44

Thanks for the above info, I thought it was still spring! Roll Eyes

My opinion, coaches don't want this. I think that they will however cut more schollies now, so more can go back to complain. NCAA doesn't like complaints. Smile

This mess that the NCAA created would make me think twice about going to college versussigning with a pro team. If you get a little money and the MLB scholarship program, why put up with this BS? For all the kids drafted in the first ten rounds or so, the college alternative is very unattractive. If the scouts sell it correctly, I can see them being very effective at signing kids.

I also agree. I know a kid what was drafted out of HS in the middle rounds. Never thought he would really consider the pros (because he has decent grades) but at this point he is.

It has always been hard for colleges to sign players drafted in the early rounds and get them in school but if college coaches start jerking kids around on a routine basis, they may find it harder to sign the players farther down in the draft as they may start looking favorably at the $$ and the MLB scholarship program.
I think this is just the start. It will most likely become more ruthless as coaches, can not afford to keep a kid for 4 years on a 33% scholly and not be productive on the field. I also think that we will see some coaches use the system so it will help their APR. If you cut a kid or lrt him know that he is not in your programs future after their Soph or Jr year, there will be less chance that the kid will transfer, and he may stay to finish his education. The school would still benefit per graduation rate. Granted some will leave but a Good student who will have to red shirt and will not be able to play until their Senior year may make the decision to call an end to their college baseball.
