scholarship question

This may be a stupid question, but we are very new to this whole recruiting thing. I know that D1 schools are allowed 11.7 scholarships for 27 players. My question is...what is a typical offer for a pitcher? I have had a friend tell me that pitchers tend to get better offers than others, but I'm still not sure what that means. I'd love to hear your thoughts....

Power starting pitchers may get 100%. This is still a relatively rare offer however.

Biggest schollys I know for pitchers or stud position players end up being about 70% of total. This can be a combination of athletic and merit aid - but I know about 4 or 5 guys whose total was the 70%. These are the exceptions. Lots of guys get the minimum 25%, especially when they can't add merit money to the offer.

You need to break it down into athletic and academic scholarships. It's not uncommon to get 100% between the two if you're a stud pitcher and a great student to boot. It's very rare to get 100% just from athletic money and I would say that the most common athletic offer for a very good pitcher is in the 50-60% range.

Top prospect pitchers get close to a full to be kept from the draft.

Lot depends on the program (and type) and what the emphasis is on their program.

I think he's talking about the draft, since it was mentioned that some athletic offers will be higher to dissuade someone from turning pro.

I think people would be surprised by the number of full or almost full scholarships. It's not common, but the players involved are not common either.

PGStaff, do you have information on college programs as to who funds 11.7 and who funds 5.5? Not asking for it. Just wondering if you've cracked that case, because it's not easy to find out, when players and parents are beginning to look at schools.

When you say an offer is 50, 60 or 100%, that is 50,60 or 100% of what? Is the percentage applicable to tuition, room, board, books, fees, etc..? Just trying to understand what is included and not included in an offer.

My son's good friend is getting 90% at a major west coast program, and like PG said he is not common. That said he has been pased over for the USA 18U National team. He is also a position player.
