Scoring Question

To be tagged, doesn't the runner have to make an attempt to go to second base?

If it was a bang bang play at first I'm not sure I would call it an E3. A bang bang play means the call could go either way, and on an error the baserunner has to be clearly out. As on how to score it, I have no idea.

He definitely should have been out. I don't know the specific rule citation, but the ball was live and the batter-runner definitely vacated the base.

Our scorer scored it:
E3, fielder's choice 3U.

E-3 and give the first baseman a putout. Assuming the runner would have been out if the first baseman had held on to the ball then you have to give an error to the first baseman because the runner was safe (if only for a brief period). The runner is then called out by the fact that he abandoned the base not by the tag by the first baseman.
Rule 7.08(a) Comment: Any runner after reaching first base who leaves the baseline heading for his dugout or his position believing that there is no further play, may be declared out if the umpire judges the act of the runner to be considered abandoning his efforts to run the bases
but I think you have to award the putout to the first baseman in order to prove the box score.

HOW TO PROVE A BOX SCORE
(c) A box score is in balance (or proved) when the total of the team’s times at bat, bases on balls received, hit batters, sacrifice bunts, sacrifice flies and batters awarded first base because of interference or obstruction equals the total of that team’s runs, players left on base and the opposing team’s putouts.

I see we were posting at the same time. The way your scorer scored the play(s) is the way I would have scored it. E-3 and 3U.

I still don't get how the runner was clearly out of it was a bang bang play.

nd - If the ball got there before the runner & was dropped, E3.

Fungo is correct. E3 & credit F3 with a PO.

I understand if he dropped the ball and he would have been out then it's an error. That's common sense. But the shortstop had to charge the ball and then throw and it was a bang bang play. I guess I'm just not interpreting a bang bang play correctly. I always thought it was a play that could go either way.

"Bang bang" does add a bit of confusion to the play but “bang bang” is just a figure of speech that is not used in determining a hit or an error. If the ball gets there before the runner, and the ball is dropped, it is an error.

I am not the scorekeeper. However, my son was the SS. Made a great play, had the runner out by less than a step.

Simply put, had the 1B caught the ball, runner would have been out. My "bang bang" comment probably made things confusing.

Bottom line, based on the comments here I feel our scorekeeper scored it right: E3, 3U.

As a selfish dad, would have liked to see a 6-3 out because my guy made a heck of a play on the front end.....nevertheless we got the guy out and won the game......
